So, I just found out that Amazon is building a HUGE, like 900 Acre solar farm where I live, and it serves only to power their data center... How ridiculous is that?

Is there anything I can do to put a wrench in this?

Would you prefer a fossil-fuel power station? There are many things wrong with Amazon and I advise anyone to avoid their services/hardware. However generating energy from renewable energy is a good thing. Hopefully Amazon will, at some point, bankrupt and the generated energy energy will be better used.

This post reminded me of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NIMBY.
But yeah, more solar/wind is a good thing, especially in a large GHG-emitter such as the US.

I would prefer neither. Why cut down trees, possibly fill in marshlands, and give up wonderful farm-land so that people can watch the newest episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians!?

What?! They actually build this non-sense on top of perfectly fertile land? Now that's a real sin! Open spaces should be for people to recreate, trees to produce oxygen, give birds a home and shade for people, and any fertile ground to grow food and feed all of them. That's true harmony with nature. Not to destroy everything so then you can build something that's slightly better than what you could build until that moment (like an Oil well).

I hope that what you're saying is the truth, because even though this isn't related with computers at all. I'm now really mad with amazon.

I haven't seen the land myself, so I don't know exactly, but we are a very rural area, and most of it is populated by Marshlands, Farmlands, and water. For 900 Acres to be populated with a solar far, the only assumption I can come up with is that those types of lands will be used. Now, it IS current property owners who are leasing the land to Amazon, and apparently it's only a 30 year lease. (Just found more info on it.) So I guess that could be ok... though leases can be renewed, of course...

"fertile ground to grow food and feed all of them"
Well, I don't know anything about this place, but modern agriculture is pretty bad for the environment (pesticides, fertilizer, erosion, etc). And much of the food grown is fed to livestock; if it were fed to people directly, we could feed a lot more people.

900 acres wasted just to power one data center? You have to be kidding! But if I take this as a mere experiment then it's not too bad, so let's see what happens.
