Awful mess with MATE, LXDE, E17 (etc?) but not KDE Plasma, GNOME 3 from Debootstrap

If, from a debootstrap of Trisquel, I installed trisquel-base, xorg, and KDE plasma (on Trisquel 6) or GNOME 3 (on Trisquel 7), everything looks normal. On the other hand, if I install LXDE, E17, or MATE (all on Trisquel 6 and I haven't tested XFCE yet) I end up getting (see attached image).

I think/thought it's a missing dependancy but if it is I can't quite put my hand on what it is. Any ideas, guys?

What graphics card do you have? I was using the default GNOME desktop from 7.0 on a computer with nvidia, and I had similar problems.

Intel Graphics HD, and I think on an Ivy bridge processor.
Oh, and it's 64-bit, on a laptop, and the problem I'm currently having is on Trisquel 6 (which I've installed MATE on), and with LXDM.

Your hardware probably is too recent for Trisquel 6 Toutatis' default configuration. Try to update the Linux-libre kernel. You can easily have its version 3.13 by installing the package linux-image-generic-lts-trusty (in the repository of Trisquel 6).

Another installation of Trisquel 6 works fine with KDE so I think that's not the problem - and the problematic installation has got Jxself's 3.14.5 kernel.
