Hello everyone,

I have tried all free as in freedom media players I am aware of to recognize and successfully sync with my iPod running Rockbox And actually recognize Rockbox as the firmware.

The only one that fully accomplishes this task is Banshee. But I fear Banshee is dead. It now force closes when trying to open it. Is it even still in the repos? There is nothing that I can find in the web to state that Banshee is dead only that is hasn't been updated in years.

If a fork of Banshee exists somewhere I would love to know about it.

It is/was a fantastic media player and I would hate to see it go. Banshee enabled me to kick iTunes out of my life!

Any info would be much appreciated!

All the best!

Steve

Hi Steve ;-)
Can you open Banshee with your terminal
$ banshee
it will give you error messages(or not )that you can post here

Yes Banshee is still in the repo.Have you tried Clementine ( a fork of Amarok) ?

Banshee is in Trisquel 7's repository and probably in Trisquel 8's (because it is in Ubuntu 16.04's).

I can recommend exaile. It is an excellent player. I have no idea about the crapple compatibility but in your repo you'll find a package named exaile-plugin-ipod, so I guess it will work.
cheers

Banshee haven't released a stable version since Feb 2014 (2.6.2), which makes it seem abandoned on the surface. But keep in mind that Banshee is a UI that sits on top of GNOME, GStreamer, Mono, SQlite, and a bunch of other free code components. It may be that most of the active development goes on in these dependencies, so Banshee doesn't need to release new versions very often.

Feb 2014 was just before an Ubuntu LTS release, so that's probably why they put out a stable release then. It is true that there's been two LTS releases since then, but perhaps the Banshee UI just hasn't needed any updates? The crashing problems you are having might be related to outdated versions of some dependencies, and may be solved when Trisquel 8 drops.
