As I was trying to keep up with the Briar app, I found this:

https://briarproject.org/news/2022-briar-removed-from-google-play

Pity there is no desktop version. Or do you know of any?

"If the internet’s down, Briar can sync via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, keeping the information flowing in a crisis. If the internet’s up, Briar can sync via the Tor network."

Ah there is in fact something secretly brewing: https://code.briarproject.org/briar/briar-desktop.

EDIT: it is going so fast I can't seem to keep up: https://briarproject.org/download-briar-desktop.

Latest Release: Briar Desktop 0.3.1-beta (13 October 2022).

You must replace Google Play for F-droid (https://f-droid.org/).

Then Android for Replicant (https://replicant.us/) and then your phone for your computer.

Clearly you totally failed to read my posts. You seem to be possibly suffering from acute compulsive Trisquelis forumpostitis.

That said, I am not sure why you would not simply forget about that mobile phone (which I guess is what you are blabbering about) instead of going through all these complicated steps.

Someone might install Replicant on their phone for the same reason that someone might install Trisquel on their computer: Software freedom. Someone might use F-Droid over Google Play for that same reason, and because F-Droid isn't subject to the same policies: Briar wasn't removed from F-Droid: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.briarproject.briar.android/

The suggestion irrefragable injunction said: "...and then your phone for your computer." The previous steps make sense, except in that case. An easy thing to miss.

EDIT: also, of course, the whole idea of this thread is that there is a beta version for the desktop app, which bypasses the whole mobile problem at once.

> Briar wasn't removed from F-Droid

I thought that would be obvious from the OP. By the way, for those who could not follow the link, the actual title of that page is: "Briar is available on Google Play again".

Yes, although that still doesn't exclude that it was removed (and hasn't been from F-Droid) so the point of referring to F-Droid still stands; and the removal, even if temporary, was seemingly enough of a concern to mention it in the first message.

That clearly implies that it was, and that is precisely the point I was trying to make in the OP. I should probably have been more explicit about it, it may have spared us time.

That said, I need to ask: are you the one voting posts up and down?

Yes, clearly it was removed and re-added on the Google Play side. My point being that didn't happen on the F-Droid side. All the more reason to use F-Droid. That F-Droid's all free software, has only free software apps, didn't have the removal that was a concern of yours, etc. (All of this is in support of iShareFreedom's recommendation and in response to the " I am not sure why you would not simply forget about that mobile phone ... instead of going through all these complicated steps.")

"That said, I need to ask: are you the one voting posts up and down?"

No. If you check the forum's history there's been much discussion and debate about that topic of people being able to vote, who votes, being able to vote without even participating in the conversation, and etc.

Yes, there definitely seems to be a mad voter problem. On my browser, your previous post seemed to have got up voted the moment it was posted (the timer on the main forum page was still saying "0s"). I believe voter names should be displayed next to the minus and plus buttons, maybe that way the rating system would be used more sparingly.

I still do not think that an injunction to ditch your mobile was an appropriate post in this context, but we do not need to agree about this. I think we agree on the software freedom points you made, which I believe are way more helpful.

Prospero - that's pretty dastardly of you to try to force iShareFreedom and jxself into buying and using Google Pixel phones like that. And to try to force them to watch NetFlix on them, on premium NetFlix accounts.

Bad kitty.

What's even worse is that they actually did it, and now, thanks to you, they are addicted to watching the "Stranger Things" series and are binge-watching it.

I'm going to have to downvote all of your posts I think.

Why not ballyhoo for those monster corporations while we can? They are going to eat us anyway. Bellyhooing sounds much less fun. Tooting from inside their belly may be something, though.

You could hire the mad voter instead, and spare yourself time.

'If the internet’s down, Briar can sync via Bluetooth'

Briar says "Peer-to-peer encrypted messaging and forums" but would this forum would be accessible if the internet was down?
Or is there a different class of 'Briar' forums?

Yes, they are talking about the Briar in-house forums that Briar users can create.

There is short summary there, if you scroll about half page down: https://briarproject.org/manual

Briar does look like a very cool app.
