Cannot install 'mplayer-gui', got error messages instead

I want to download and stall MPlayer from the software repositories, but I get this error message.
"Cannot install 'mplayer-gui'
This application conflicts with other installed software. To install 'mplayer-gui' the conflicting software must be removed first.
Switch to the 'synaptic' package manager to resolve this conflict."
So I opened the synaptic package manager, selected 'mplayer-gui' and tried to install it. However, I still get an error message.
"Could not apply changes!
Fix broken packages first"
What is the conflicting software that needs to be removed? What are the broken packages and how can I fix them?

I think the mplayer package has been replaced by mplayer2. Try installing that package instead:
sudo aptitude install mplayer2
I tried your command, but I didn't get the result I expected.
sudo aptitude install mplayer2

This is what I did. I selected the package 'mplayer-gui'. The square in front of the package name turned red. I then clicked Edit>Fix Broken Packages. However, I got an error message.

Synaptic is a graphical interface to "apt-get". Trisquel ("normal" GNOME edition) has it by default in its menu.
At the bottom-left corner of this interface, there is a "Custom filters" button. Click on it and then select, in the list above, "Broken". In this way, the right-hand side of the interface lists the packages installed on your system but that APT considers "broken".
I have done as you suggested, but when I right clicked on the package name, the option to remove the package was greyed out. I cannot remove the broken package. I can only 'mark for installation' and 'unmark' it.
Weird. I would then try to unmark it.
Don't you have other broken packages? In the screenshot you uploaded, you wrote something in the "Quick filter". That potentially hides other broken packages.
I really don't see any broken packages other than mplayer-gui. If I clear the quick filter field, the broken packages list will become empty. If I unmark the mplayer-gui package, it will be removed from the list of broken packages.
Maybe you can try to reproduce the problem on your computer.
