Merry gravmass!! ho ho ho

I'm trying to install gnu on a friend of mine's acer aspire 5520 so I inserted a flash usb just to see if trisquel would work.. I click on "try trisquel.." and after a couple of seconds a vierd grey flashing screen comes up and nothing happens..
So I thought it was the nvidia geforce in the laptop..
But to my greatest dismay the same thing happens with Xubuntu live usb and this is the first time I run into a similar issue (I managed to free several pcs froma windblowz).
Any suggestion is most welcome

How does an older edition work?

didn't try that david - this friend of mine lives far far away from me and he had so little time to spend at my place - I did a format and reinstall windblowz..
It felt so bad to install that proprietary junk but what could I do..
:(

p.s - it is certainly the shitty geforce. I loaded tails on his box and it went through the same issue (weird artifacts on screen and flashing, but then when tails was fully loaded the driver was loaded also and tails worked good on it..)

Did you try Alt+Ctrl+ one of the F keys? Sometimes you can get a terminal and some error messages that way;

Maybe you can talk to your friend and he may try to install at least some gnu distro, maybe one of the not-so-free ones until you visit him next time and finish the job ;)
i think you should explain why free software is important and if he's interested, then you sure can help him to get as free as possible at the moment;
if you can't convince him then it's no use and you should leave it with windows.

quantum - that acer is like a decade old.. I told my friend he would have a pc 4 times more performing (at least, being that the vista on that box took 5 min to boot as it had a lot of malware on it probably) and he was happy with that idea. I told him I use Trisq and explained the importance of "using a computer vs being used by a computer". Anyway he told me he would buy a new box when he cashes some green and that he would call me so that I can check if the hardware is gnu friendly - he was impressed by the speed of trisquel on my intel atom!! :)
I'll install a gnu distro on his laptop the next time he pays me a visit and hopefully it'll be trisquel
cheers
