Control+semicolon (C-;) brings up an "e"

Hi, I'm using T11 (Mate). When I press C-; in Emacs, it brings up an "e", and Emacs doesn't get those key presses. It only goes away when I press Esc. It appears in other graphical applications as well, like Abrowser or Pluma.

What is this "e", how do I make it not appear with C-;.

When I press C-; in emacs, I get a message "C-; is undefined". In other apps, it does write any character.

Which keyboard layout are you using? Do you have specific keyboard options?

My layout is French (France) azerty. I also tested with US qwerty, it does exactly the same.

EDIT: Sorry, I had only tested with Trisquel 12. With Trisquel 11, even with my keyboard layout, I also see an "e", which is underlined, and if I continue typing, all what I type is underlined. If I press space after C-;, I have a menu to select an emoji.

There is an answer on this stackexchange (https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/746574/how-to-disable-the-mapping-of-ctrl-to-underscore-e-in-ubuntu).

I just don't know how to undo change.

gsettings set org.freedesktop.ibus.panel.emoji hotkey "@as []"

Thanks for the link. Going further into the link various comments say it's an emoji picker and provided by Ibus. The key combination to invoke this can be changed graphically by:

Ibus Preferences > Emoji

.

I personally changed it Super+semicolon, as this is a very useful feature. I wish it were documented.

In Trisquel 10, I think ctrl+'.' would bring up Pluma's graphical emoji picker, but I didn't realize that wasn't working until after reading this thread (I don't use emojis very often). Now, in Trisquell 11, ctrl+'.' and ctrl+';' seem to pull up the underlined 'e' in most applications (but not IceCat).

I like the old Pluma menu better, but this one has the advantage of being mostly system-wide.

I find it that Ibus is really annoying and usually I go to settings->language/region and change the input method to Xim.

I know Xim is an old interface, but "it just works" for me.

As for why I find Ibus annoying it's just that it has some weird 'preview popups' when using accentuated characters on GTK applications (like emacs). For some unknown reason, it's impossible to disable those pesky popups when using Ibus.
