i tried installing trisquel to a second hard drive. the main drive has windows xp. everything seemed normal until it tried to load the boot loader. the computer hung. had to kill the power to bring it alive again. when i did - no dual boot, just windows. should the boot loader be on the drive with windows (c:) or on the linux drive?

any help is appreciated.

If I remember well, the hard drive can be master or slave (some jumpers to adjust). I believe GRUB should be on the master drive (otherwise Windows' boot-loader is run).

However you may only need to switch the disks in the BIOS' boot order. At least, that is the first thing I would try.

the second drive doesn't even show up in the bios boot sequence. not sure if that means there's a problem with the drive or the MBR hasn't been changed to show it as bootable.

Your BIOS should show that it is aware of each hard drive.

As a new user who tends to mess around with things (I currently have three drives running four operating systems) I've had this problem many, many times.

There's an 'Ubuntu Boot Repair' disc/program that has been invaluable to me. It can be found at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

I recommmend burning a copy AND installing it on your system. (Just in case. It never hurts to have a copy handy.) When it's done it tells you which hard drive to boot from.

This program is pretty much idiot-proof. Trust me, I know. :)
