Ethernet issues on Trisquel

Hi there,
I've been using Trisquel for a while now in my ThinkPad T400. Wi-Fi works great (swapped network card), but when I try to plug an Ethernet cable, the whole system freezes completely. If I take too long to pull the cable out, the machine reboots.
I have tried:
-Powering on with the cable in: GNUboot screen, starts loading the kernel and freezes.
-Switching off the Wi-Fi using the hardware switch and plugging the cable in, freezes.
-Plugging the cable in and immediately running "systemctl restart NetworkManager", nothing happened, only Wi-Fi dropped.
I also heard something about "netplan", which supposedly is the default program to manage networks on Trisquel. Is that correct? Did this ever happen with any of you?
No, it did not. Have you tried using Ethernet from Trisquel's live system? I do not suggest that as a permanent solution. Only as a way to discover if the configuration of your system is at fault. Also, any relevant message in the journal? To only see errors (or worse), execute that command in a terminal:
$ journalctl -p 3
If you are super desperate, there are ethernet dongles online.
But most RYF devices have libre ethernet so... it might not be needed. Only if yours is broken.

No, I use ethernet a lot on my T400 and never had any problem with it. Magic Banana's suggestions might help to find some hint. I don't know whether it could be a hardware problem.
EDIT: The flash has something specific for ethernet, from the documentation at https://www.gnu.org/software/gnuboot/web/docs/install/ich9utils.html, GNU boot includes one MAC address and to keep the original MAC address of the computer, it is necessary to use ich9gen to modify the ROM before flashing. Do you know if that was done?
One solution could be to do this and reflash GNU boot.
Thank you for the answers, everyone ;)
I will try your suggestions once I have some free time. Will report back.
Okay, I have tried the wired connection in the live system and... no deal. Even tried another distro's live USB, and it's the same.
Most likely a hardware fault, then. When the opportunity comes, I'll disassemble it and take a closer look, see if I forgot something after flashing GNUboot lol :P
Thanks again!

If you did not relock the flash, you can reflash GNUboot without dissassembly.
