Hello gang
So I'm looking to do the next step from leaving proprietary software, I currently have a minix x5 media player box that I use to stream netflix (please dont cast me away yet!)and xbmc. I looking online for a solution but the results are not promising. Now I know someone is going to be why not just use a normal computer and the answer is simple my current media player only uses a couple of watts compared to my other computer with still uses 60watts of power, I know 60 watts is nothing but I would like to use a device that requires as little as power as possible, maybe one day even power the box with solar power, ;), if any knows please let me know
Some time ago I looked for a simple clean HTPC that stream media from other computers and the alternative I found that isnt 100% libre but is low power and easy to use is a Raspberry Pi 2/Beagleboard with software like Kodi (Old name XMBC) or OSMC. The unit powers from a USB port and if your TV/monitor has integrated USB ports that is just dandy. Hide the unit behind the TV and get a nice remote and/or a small keyboard with integrated mouse pad.
I do not know if it works with Netflix. I do not support this company because it supports DRM in HTML5 standard.
I have not built this my self to I cant say how well it works. What I know is that the older Raspberry Pi units are a lot slower then the new model that was just released.
Question have you tried or downloaded to test Trisquel on your system by any chance?
You can find some great little X86 based machines nowadays, weather they run Core/Libre Boot is another issue but there is a lot of work going on in that area so there is a good chance eventually the entire system ill be libre.
https://www.libretrend.com, which was announced on this forum have some decent machines if you are interested.
I just checked the libre link, looks cool but for know I will continue to use my android box, I just measured the power required to run the unit and its only 4 watts, 6 to 7 watts if I use the gpu
