One person suggested whatsapp. I declined. I suggested signal.
which he installed. Then he rejected to give moxie his phonenumber.
Interesting if you have whatsapp installed.

Is there a zero knowledge free software messenger, which is
available in android, fdroid, ios and desk top and the
other person has to do nothing more than install the
program. Enter a username and something like a
psswd?

Are there programs which only support some of the
platforms? One of them must be fdroid or
desk top.

Thank you.

Consider the use of Riot.im or RocketChat.

I have tested wire. Messages and audio worked. I do not know
if the web browser option is free software only?

Have you tested riot?
I cannot get riot to work in the web browser.
I registered one matrix account on one computer and another
account on another computer. But I cannot get the
computers to connect. If I log in on one computer, start
a chat and enter the riot name of the other computer I
get this message
You have entered an invalid address.
Have you been able to send messages?

After a lot of searching and comparing my choice definitely goes to delta chat (delta.chat), under active development and constant improvement. Linux desktop version has now been released.

Riot.im and matrix protocol look like a very good option too.

XMPP protocol is good and you can easily find those applications from F-droid. There are applications for desktop-oriented GNU/Linux distributions as well.

However, they don't work well on iOS (iPhone, iPad and any other iThings) for some very specific reason. If you were a victim of iThing(s), trash it. (Or better, give it away to someone you don't like; or even better, sell it to someone you hate...)

See defectivebydesign.org/apple for more details about the abuses of iThings.

There are libre XMPP clients for iPhone and Android. Anything in the F-Droid repository will be compatible with Android. The client I recommend for Android/Replicant is called "Conversations". For iOS, ChatSecure should work.

Conversations no longer support OTR encryption. If you need OTR, use Xabber, Pix-Art, or Conversations Legacy.

Surely enough, there are XMPP clients for iThing. However, they don't work well because iOS is awkwardly (stupidly) designed, and users are forbidden to replace it or fix it. I have certain friends who are victims of iThing. It's very difficult to communicate them using XMPP. The only solution is to trash the iThing.
