I almost jumped for joy when I saw this in the IRS tax instructions.
Then, I read the rest of it.

Interesting. How do I install this? The website looks like a bunch of
scams and ads.

Download the appropriate file for the year for which you want to do taxes from here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/opentaxsolver/files/
Extract the contents of the downloaded file, and open the "Run_taxsolve_GUI" executable file.
Should hopefully just work on your system. It does on my Parabola system.

Welcome to Sourceforge - That's the way their website is designed to look. I'm assuming they probably make money off the ad revenue.

Thanks. I grabbed the 2019 one.

It worked!

I notice it says "schedule A, B and C" but IRS.gov only has numbers:
Schedule 2, etc.

IRS definitely has Schedule A (itemized deductions), Schedule B (interest and dividend income above a certain amount), and schedule C (profit and loss from a self-owned business).

With the 2017 Tax Reform, there were 6 new numbered schedules. Schedules 1, 2, and 3 are more common, and are described here: https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1040
Here's another good explanation of the different 1-6 schedules: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/business-taxes/discussion/what-is-schedule-2-tax/00/146140#

In the Taxsolver program, you would normally start a "1040 (w/scheds A,B,D)". Questions for Schedules A, B, D, 1, 2, and 3 are all within that program. Later, if you own your own business or need to file state tax, then you would start a Schedule C for profit and loss from your own business or start one of the 9 included State tax programs.

Here is a good video on how to use the program: https://invidio.us/watch?v=vqhsfQ9gsFg
The OpenTaxsolver website (http://opentaxsolver.sourceforge.net/) has a lot of additional information about the program you may find useful. There are links to an OpenTaxsolver mailing list, a blog, an FAQ, and other links that should be helpful.

There's also a lot of information about how to use it on the project's website: http://opentaxsolver.sourceforge.net/
