Hi,

The only thing I know about Free Software for network infrastructure devices is OpenWRT/LEDE. But that is normally used for small wireless routers. What about switches and routers for a very large organization?

How would you liberate the network infrastructure of a large organization which is currently using Cisco switches, Cisco routers and other Cisco network appliances?

Is there any free firmware to flash those state-of-the-art evil devices?

If not, let's replace the hardware, what would you use?

No matter what the cost is.

Thank you.

Thank you Heather.

But, isn't there any other solution for large networks? Is that all we have in the free software community? I am not complaining, I just want to know.

What about stackable 48-port switches? Or high-performance routers with optical and other interfaces.

Hi Lola,
perhaps contacting Brett Smith http://www.fsf.org/author/brett would help you?
I read his posts about the FSF vs CISCO lawsuit that resulted in Cisco agreed to appoint a Free Software Director for Linksys, a subsidiary of Cisco.

Well the principles of switches is a tricky one, why? every manufacture uses hardware design for a specific purpose, yes, most of the protocols believe or not, are gpl license, but when they develop new technologies is their LICENSE AND invention.
CISCO AND APPLE, THEY ARE REAL GOOD, BUT THE SCRIPT THEY USE IS MOSTLY PRIVATELY OWN.

i USE A TP-LINK MANAGEABLE 24 PORTS SWITCH AND IT USES COMPLETELY GPL LICENSE SCRIPTS that it is very secure. I had no incidents with them so far. Yes, I did left IN PURPOSE a USB AS A "HONEY POT" DRIVE IN A SPECIFIC PORT with a bunch of crap to see who could hack me, i END UP WITH HIS IP, MAC ADDRESS AND LOCATION FROM FREAKING CHINA. BUT HE COULD NOT ENTER NOTHING ELSE BECAUSE MY FIREWALL WAS PROTECTING THE REST OF MY COMPUTERS. CURRENTLY I USING 2 SWITCHES ONE FOR THE dmz ONLY AND DLINK 24 PORT FOR MY INTERNAL SECURE NETWORK.
ANY QUESTIONS FEEL FREE TO QUESTION ME LADIES.

Heather

I use opennic to redirect my DNS, I refuse to use my ISP dns because is always crowd with customers and contributes with the latentcy.
Depending on your location you could research this matter by pinging the opennic dns server close and available to your area. Not alL AREAS ARE COVERED. when you got time research in THE opennick web site, and it will teach you how to do the changes.

For example: I'm on the Philippines my nearest opennick is Singapore, if you look at a geographic map is a two hour flight and they are real faraway, but it does not matter. Why?
Yes the ping is mostly 54ms which is pretty good, my other option is japan, which is 68 mills seconds both are very stable.
The reason for the world nations are connected via oceanic fiber cables, and the web is connected via oceanic cables. believe or not my nearest one is Honkkong but I don't use it FOR PERSONAL reasons. the reason it is awesome because it is not about speed, that is what we all pay for, but base-band quality. lets not confuse broadband and base-band. remember in lamers term for better clarification dns is where all your data is flowing. basically works as a post office delivering your mail.
yes WIRED CONNECTION ARE MORE RELIABLE, BUT ALL TRANSMISSIONS AND RECEIVING DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT TO DO AND HOW?

I hope you understand me, any more questions? let me know.

I did flash my Ubiquiti wifi, I'm currently using Openwrt and it runs good so far.
Did you secure your WIFI PROPERLY ?
are YOU PAYING FOR YOUR VPN SERVICE OR IS IT FREE?
talk TO YOU LATER SRA.
