Hello, everyone!
It’s been about two years since I started switching to free software. Trisquel was there at the beginning of my journey until moving to Parabola, and has been a great means to introduce friends and family to free software. Since that time I’ve regularly checked the forums for helpful information and news regarding Trisquel and free software in general.
It’s probably high time to join the forums. I hope to be able to contribute information and knowledge to the community, much as all of you have done for me!
Thanks everyone,
Ben
welcome!
Welcome to the forums!
Welcome! I've been in a similar boat, only occasionally commenting, always reading, and also considering a switch to Parabola for a bit, though not any time soon. What triggered your switch to Parabola and what do you find better or worse?
Again, and most importantly: welcome!
The biggest reason for switching in my case was to use newer packages. This of course comes with the occasional bug from the software being hot off the stove, but if one’s willing to deal with them you get a fast, up to date distribution. Plenty of desktop environments as well!
If you like to program it’s nice to have the newer tools, too. Libraries are up to date, which also makes building programs from source a lot easier.
The problems I’ve faced are usually package dependency issues and having to roll back software. The Parabola maintainers will most likely post something about a package issue on Parabola’s website, like they did recently for the Linux-libre kernel.
If you decide to try it, it’s always helpful to have Trisquel around! I keep it on my desktop, in case there’s ever a problem. Fun fact – when going through the Parabola Installer CLI, first select a menu option/s with the space bar and then press enter. I may have not known that the first time installing it, and wondered what was wrong… xD
Thank you all for the welcoming.
