Hello Everyone,

This may sound like a "stupid" question, but how to install Gnome-Shell on a fresh Trisquel installation ? I mean, I can install whatever DE I want (unity, unity-2d, gnome-shell), it is always the same, they don't appear on the list at all.

How can I solve this problem ?

Thank in Advance.

At the Login manager look for "GNOME" in the DE menu.

There is no Gnome on the list (only gnome classic that bring me to the normal Trisquel DE).

All I can think of then is to restart X or reboot? I can't help you any
more. sorry.

That is weird. I remember only installing gnome-session to have GNOME in GDM's menu.

I think you need to install unity-greeter and gnome-session.

OH ! So that's the package missing xD Thank you :D Just one more question that doesn't have to do with the title (if there is any problem I create a new topic).

Just installing the 3.5-libre kernel as sudo apt-get install linux-libre64 doesn't replace the original one (at least it doesn't appear as for remove, and virtualbox for example can't compile the vboxdrv module because he is searching for the old kernel)... so... is there a need to manually remove the old kernel ?.. It's weird that bugs like this still exist... in my opinion those are bugs.

Installing a new kernel doesn't replace the old one, in case there is an issue with the new kernel.

Read this for Ubuntu (same for Trisquel):

Hi,

I just installed gnome-shell in trisquel 5.5 I was using trisquel mini. during the instalation of gnome is asked me what login manager I wanted and I chose the gnome one (there can only be one unless you do some network stuff).

For the moment gnome3 looks really good. I find it less confusing than kde and maybe a bit more confusing than unity. But time will tell.

I already costume it so will search ddg.com and not google as discussed here:

used http://help.duckduckgo.com/customer/portal/articles/255991 to do it.

and raised the bug mentioned here:
http://trisquel.info/en/forum/how-do-you-use-gnome-shell#comment-20428

in https://trisquel.info/en/issues/7197
I did not find reference anywhere else. It could be a bug that could be raised upstream. I will coment.

Trisquel has some agreement with DuckDuckGo, but I don't remember what exactly it entails. The main difference between my config and the DDG one is that I have the Trisquel referrer (like what you have in Abrowser) in the URL. This might be useful to Trisquel if there is some financial gain.

The query string portion for that is "t=trisquel".

I am trying to install Gnome shell in Trisquel 6. The problem is
https://trisquel.info/en/issues/7367

In the mean time and to test my theory how do I force, override
conflicting, broken deps? So apt* will install "gnome-session" without
wanting to not install "gnome-shell" which affects "gnome-core" and so
"gnome".

PS. I won't be installing any mono apps.

See this previous post regarding gnome-shell:

Well, I don't know about forcing, but I got it to work by installing this PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3

Then you can install both gnome-session and gnome-shell.

Sorry wrong thread. I meant for my prev post to go to the "Remaining
issues in Trisquel 6.0" thread.

That’s because it cuts out the official broken pkgs by providing there
own pkgs. It's a work-around.

Can anyone tell me where is the unity-greeter package in Trisquel 6.0 ?

If I try to install gnome-shell I don't see it in the GDM Selection Menu, if I install Unity I can't see it either, but if I uninstall gnome-shell with Unity installed then Ubuntu Session appears and opens Unity.

Hey guys! First time posting, hope I get this right.

I'm testing Trisquel 5.5 on VirtualBox and tried to install Gnome Shell following the instructions on this thread (packages gnome-shell gnome-session unity-greeter), but on the login screen when I select GNOME as the session I get an error "Unable to start session" and it returns to login.

Any ideas why?

Correction: the exact error phrase is "Failed to load session gnome", no error codes.

I believe you need 3D acceleration in the VM to do so.

Spot on! That was it, thank you!

Yeah, come to think of it, that's what I got when I tried running GNOME Shell on a system with no 3D acceleration (Radeon integrated graphics in my case). If this is your case, you'll need to get a new video card (or perhaps, if you have an Nvidia card, update the kernel) to use GNOME Shell. If you need a new video card, http://libre.thinkpenguin.com has a good one (it's under "Accessories").
