Hm...
I wonder what effect this will have on the Fedora project. Some people in the comments on that story are dismissive, but Fedora is a rather important OS when it comes to libre software. Time will tell, I suppose.
You're right, it's hard to say what the effects will be. My primary concern here is the future of Redhat's free software desktop contributions since the emphasis of this merger seems to be based around cloud computing. I also agree that Fedora is an important project since many of the innovations in free software and GNU/Linux happen there. Hopefully their contributions will continue as they always have.
I wonder what the implications for Canonical (Ubuntu) will be.
I guess Microsoft could consider to acquire Canonical, since Losedows 10 is already binarily compatible with Ubuntu.
Because Losedows NT kernel has long been broken beyond repair, Microsoft could first let Losedows 10 binarily compatible with Ubuntu. Then, it could release a (maybe tivoized) Linux-based operating system (with any GPL v3 components removed, if it wants to tivoize the entire system) which is binarily compatible with Losedows. The two systems coexist in parallel for a long period before Microsoft ultimately deprecate Losedows.
