Is it possible to tie this thing to Pidgin and Thunderbird, instead of Empathy and Evolution? Is it possible to tie it to more than only email and instant messaging?

You can try the pidgin-libnotify package. I'm not sure if that is exactly what you want. What is it that you are trying to do?

Empathy and Evolution can be started through the indicator applet, they show up as "Chat" and "Email, news, etc.", not like "Empathy" and "Evolution".

I'd like to use the applet like before, but with Pidgin and Thunderbird. I'll try the pidgin-libnotify out today, thanks.

OK, tried pidgin-libnotify out and it worked - applet displays pidgin with all the popups and no need for the icon in the tray anymore.
