https://trisquel.info/en/forum/installing-tq-11-overwrite-option-does-not-work

At the time I tested trisquel 11 and came to the conclusion, that the overwrite empty disk space option does not work. Because the overwrite option is a security feature and it did not work, I refrained from using trisquel 11.

With trisquel 11.0.1 I revisited testing trisquel. Again it appears that overwrite empty disk space does not work. I burned trisquel 11.0.1 iso 2.9 GB Live USB/DVD on a dvd. No error messages during burning. On a non libreboot notebook having a terabyte big hdd I installed trisquel 11.0.1.

On debian if you select wiping the hdd a balk displays showing how wiping the hdd moves on.

On trisquel installation moves straight to copying files and install system. Installing trisquel is less than an hour. Overwriting a tb big hdd takes hours. During installation at no point are any messages about overwriting the hdd displaying. Suggesting the overwriting option does not work.

What is the purpose of the overwrite empty disk space option in trisquel? An overwrite option should shred the entire hdd before installing trisquel. Thank you.

Have you filed a bug on https://gitlab.trisquel.org/groups/trisquel/-/issues/ as jxself suggested you one year ago?

Because the overwrite option is a security feature and it did not work, I refrained from using trisquel 11.

You can shred partitions (only /dev/sda1 in my example below, but you can specify several, separated with spaces) executing that command in a terminal of the live system:
$ shred /dev/sda1
You can proceed then with the installation of Trisquel. Be careful with your identification of the partition(s) to shred: the whole point of shredding is that the operation cannot be reverted! To learn more about GNU shred:
$ info shred

> You can shred partitions

I already have shredded the hdd in question on another system before installing
trisquel. The matter is if the trisquel 11.0.1 iso gets the
overwriting wrong then what else does the iso get wrong? Such errors
make trisquel appear not reliable.

No. Reporting a bug requires a gitlab account. I do not want to get a gitlab
report in order to report a trisquel bug. Do you know of other options to
report a trisquel bug?

Reporting a bug requires a gitlab account. I do not want to get a gitlab report in order to report a trisquel bug.

It is Trisquel's own instance of GitLab, gitlab.trisquel.org and not gitlab.com.

I do not want to create an account in order to report a bug.

In should be an option to file a bug when you are logged in
on the trisquel forum.

https://listas.trisquel.info/mailman/listinfo/
Also trisquel could have a bug report mailing list.

If you have reproduced what appears to be an overwrite error then please
tell here.

Probably a dumb question but is a partition empty disk space? What exactly is empty disk space?

If you look carefully at the following picture, you will be able to determine precisely what "empty disk space" is. My distant relative has some of his fingers right through it.

That said, I never got an "overwrite empty disk space" option while installing Trisquel. I do get an option to "Erase disk and install Trisquel", though, with a warning in red font that this will delete all data from the aforementioned disk. This is quite different from shredding/wiping, which has to be done beforehand in the manner indicated above. Maybe a translation issue?
