Hey guys, Who loves free software? Me and probably most of you. Who loves Trisquel? It is so open. Who loves KDE? Most tweakers. Who loves both but hates the fact they don`t work together? Introducing The Trisquel KDE Project, Combining both.

Why not join the development of an existing free distro, like Trisquel, rather than fragmenting effort by starting a new one?

There was already the Triskel (note the "K" for KDE) flavor that's available for someone to maintain.

I second this.

This will come out 2 years. I don`t want many people to use it.

I want it to be a small project. It is because I enjoy this. I have no code experience, It will just be a KDE setup. And I think Triskel is not that god because it is a downloadable package (Even though it is based on it). The point of this is to provide a Triskel iso with no GNOME and branding, up to date wallpapers, customization etc. This would be a ready distro.

Your distribution includes nonfree software, unlike Trisquel. So, you're recommending nonfree software at this point.

What Linus Torvalds uses is not relevant here. Linus is not a free software advocate by any means; he's an open source advocate, and not totally consistent about that, either. Trisquel, on the other hand, defers entirely to the GNU freedom philosophy. I also use Fedora, myself, but I'm not about the break this forum's policy.

If you want a powerful web browser in your distro, include Konquerer instead. I can't understand this obsession that so many people have with Chrome. It's not even that fast anymore.

First of all, I did get Abrowser working and removed Chrome. And the Konqueror thing, most people prefer a good browser to one full of features. What I like about Fiefox/Abrowser is it is fast and works with Gnash/Flash. Konqueror is old fashioned. And a project exists for people who like it, not people who don`t like software which isn`t attached to a particular desktop environment and are very selective.

I hate Chrome but I hate Konqueror and rekonq even more. At that point I couldn`t get a good open source browser working. Midori, Dillo and NetSurf are all crap.

Midori is not crap. It's fast and light, and quite stable. If you are asking for it to have even more features or you are an extension junkie, then you're already suggesting for it to leave behind its lightweight credentials.

I agree that Dillo is pretty much useless for modern day use.

Have not heard of NetSurf.

But the bottom line is, if you are making a distro that is not 100% free software, this is not the place to recommend it.

No offense to the OP, but I will stick with Trisquel & Parabola, thank you very much.

First of all, it is extremely important to me that I run a 100% free system. Second of all, as far as KDE goes, there are some non-free parts and/or recommendations of non-free software, that Trisquel is working to remove and Parabola has already removed. I strongly advise the OP to reference these links for blacklisted/altered/changed packages:

https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/software-does-not-respect-free-system-distribution-guidelines

http://libreplanet.org/wiki/List_of_software_that_does_not_respect_the_Free_System_Distribution_Guidelines

http://repo.parabolagnulinux.org/docs/blacklist.txt

Rather than trying to steal Trisquel's branding and offer non-free software, leaving confusion in the market as to whether Trisquel is a free system or not, it would be far better to review the above lists, paying particular attention to the KDE packages that require changes to convert them to 100% free, and contribute to Trisquel in that manner. And I say this as a total sucker for KDE4, as well as 100% free software systems.

He needs to be carefull, whilst 'trisquel' is a word anybody can use, the Trisquel 'brand' is protected by copyright and requires certain conditions to be met when using it.

Konqeuror, with the webkit engine, is actually an excellent browser, I have found. Isn't the webkit engine the same browser engine used by Chrome?

The only possible complaint about Konqueror with the webkit backend is the browser finger print is very unique, which isn't a good thing if you wish to preserve your anonymity while surfing.

Konquerer actually uses KHTML but can use QtWebKit too. Rekonq and Arora use QtWebKit and Midori and Epiphany/Web use WebKit/GTK+ (Epiphany in the past used Gecko). Chromium/Chrome uses its own version of WebKit.

Before this thread get's too many replies..

I appreciate that you're willing to put effort into a project, but do you think this would be the best approach?

As mentioned above, you could possibly assist with Triskel.
I suggest posting here or asking in IRC how to get started.

When you have a few minutes, I also encourage reading the article from the below link, it explains Free Software(Free as in Freedom).
https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw

Wish you well, and I hope you'll look into what I mentioned above.

Keep in mind certain comments could bring a lot of friction, be prepared for rebuttals and challenges of thought.

Cheers.

Tedious , I offered help some time ago and have heard nothing which is why I set up My website which goes some way to promoting Trisquel.

Why not just use Chromium instead of Chrome? Trisquel still purges the packages but you can get from the c-miller PPA.

For a KDE based libre distro, I suggest adding Qupzilla http://www.qupzilla.com/ to its repos.

But beware, we should patch it if it asks to install propietary plugins.
