Hi,

We have made peace with the FSF and GNU project, on our end. See:

https://libreboot.org/unity/

For avoidance of doubt, the same willingness to resume cooperation also applies to Trisquel, not just the FSF.

I personally wish this project well. Libreboot's website no longer negative mentions Trisquel.

OK. I understand that a misundertand can complicate any relationship. Specially, if are well-made rumours.

However, many times we can do choices that even can affect many important relationships and the reputation of projects like Libreboot. I've been whitness of this kind of issues; specially, with XScreensaver case, which Zawinski acted like a douchebag stalking to the Debian developers to keep the nagware of "update now or GTFO", stuff that fortunately has not been accomplished.

I hope that the next time that any software developer wants to judge to anyone about the contribution and/or authoring of source code, please read this message that I want to quote:

"The situation is very simple in fact. Somebody just lost the ground and
cannot see the difference between the free software authorship, credit
for it and property rights no more. He accepts the free license but in a
some strange one-way fashion: to get the freedom for himself and to take
it away from the others. Just like terrorists do. Setting timebombs and
objecting others to disable those bombs is not only the violation of
free software license as up to me, but also it spoils the idea of the
free software itself. Now I see how great is the idea behind the GPL."

By saying "Now I see how great is the idea behind the GPL.", I hope he
means in good/friendly sense. Otherwise, he might have seen a case of
wrong license compliance or wrong license enforcement.

Interesting! I am curious if the offended party which lead Leah to be so upset to begin with got a pay out or something. The FSF's accounts are public right, I'm curious to see when their budget for this year is disclosed how much they pay out for discrimination. Of course, two of the people who had fingers pointed at them are leaving the FSF now...coincidence? There certainly was a lot of buzz about all this at LibrePlanet this year!

That is a relief.

However, I don't see Trisquel mentioned yet on the Minifree site as an option, let alone the default it used to be. Is the peace only from the Libreboot side of things?

We may provide Trisquel by default again in the future, especially if we yet again work with the FSF for RYF certification on newer products. At present, Debian is the default as a matter of course (and none of the systems sold by Minifree are RYF certified at present; we have ditched X200/T400, in favour of X220 preorder since I'm working on that in Libreboot).

Of course, Minifree provides the customer the option of any distribution that they would like. Trisquel is a distribution.

Have you had a look at the latest alpha? It's quite recent, and apparently quite decent, so I'm not sure the point of being 'dead and abandoned' is on the horizon just yet.

I think it's legitimate to criticize if important updates (especially security updates) from upstream in Ubuntu, Debian, Mozilla etc aren't being passed down into the Trisquel repos, implemented in Abrowser / Icecat, etc.

But this complaining about Trisquel 8 is not only excessive, but also misleading. Ruben has been coming out with updated alphas on a periodic basis, each one with more progress. You can also watch the ongoing development process if you really want. Portraying a distro as "dead and abandoned" in that context is a damaging falsehood.

Yes, the Libreboot website no longer mentions Trisquel at all, even negatively.

I look forward to the new Trisquel release. While I myself personally use Debian nowadays for a variety of reasons, and probably will stay that way, I'm glad that the Trisquel project is still alive and kicking. I was worried that Trisquel was stalling some time ago.

Having a fulltime job at the FSF and being the Trisquel lead dev... I'm sure Ruben is under quite a lot of pressure. But I'm confident he'll pull through it all, with help from the community to make the new release. I know all too well what it's like to be the leader of a software project while having full-time responsibilities elsewhere, and FSF puts a lot of demand on its sysadmins.

This is good to hear Leah! I'm curious, have you considered adding 'Encrypted Trisquel' back to the libreboot docs?

https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/encrypted_trisquel.html
https://web-beta.archive.org/web/20160925173359/https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/encrypted_trisquel.html

submit it as a patch to the docs (they're in markdown)
https://libreboot.org/git.html

Since Trisquel is basically Debian (the guide for Debian that we have, also still works on Trisquel), you could just re-add the file encrypted_trisquel.md, with a link for that from gnulinux/index.md, with encrypted_trisquel.md linking (e.g. via http redirect) to encrypted_debian.html

According to Rowe, thinkpad x220 is getting libreboot. Should I start looking for a thinkpad x220? Does it have to be a certain version? How do you get libreboot on the thinkpad x220? Can you do it with software? Do you use hardware?

It *might* be getting LibreBoot- it's too early to say for certain. What we know is that the Intel ME in its processor can be 'neutralized'- cut down to the point where it's relatively harmless- without any significant damage. See https://hardenedlinux.github.io/firmware/2016/11/17/neutralize_ME_firmware_on_sandybridge_and_ivybridge.html for details.
That said, Rowe will no doubt have LibreBoot on there in no time- if you pre-order an x220 from MiniFree (minifree.org), then all profits will go towards helping the project. You also get the option of a refund if full ME removal is not achieved by the time they ship, and a warranty, so this would a great option if you don't mind the price.

As regards putting LibreBoot on, you'll probably need hardware to put it on initially (updating it can likely be done via software). I'm imagining it would be similar to the x200, which is detailed at https://libreboot.org/docs/install/x200_external.html.

Thank you. I should have visited the libreboot website before asking here. I asked some questions on libreboot irc. I got some informative answers. And got further knowledge reading what other in general wrote on the irc. They say tje flashing software that flashes thinkpad x200 should be able to flash a thinkpad x220. That maybe you can flash a thinkpad x220 with a raspberry pi 0. Whether the raspberry pi 0 can flash running on only libre software is unknown. If I understood it correctly.
On libreboot irc I read about a piece of software called me cleaner. If the thinkpad x220 gets libreboot capable, then non libre software is removed. If that does not succeed, then you may use me cleaner. Me cleaner can apparently not remove non libre software but make the computer skip using non libre software.

As I said on the other thread Leah, I admire your bravery in admitting your mistakes, and making the effort the rebuild burned bridges. I'm sure everyone involved can learn valuable lessons about community development from this experience. Best of luck with Libreboot and your other projects going forward.
