Libreoffice will not open

Until yesterday, my kept-up-to-date installation of Trisquel 7 ran Libreoffice flawlessly on a ThinkPad T420 laptop with 4GB of RAM.
Then I tried to open a 500MB binary (or text) file (an old Inbox from a Win98 installation of Netscape) and that came up as all pound signs (a.k.a. number signs ... or the lower right hand key of my cellphone).
Now Libreoffice won't open at all, either by selecting the binary (or text) file name and then choosing Libreoffice from the popup menu, or from the main Trisquel menu (opening any version of Liberoffice) and then (which never happens) selecting the file from the Places menu.
I tried sudo apt-get uninstall Liberoffice, sudo apt-get purge Libreoffice, and add/remove applications; that last one let me remove Libreoffice calc, but not Libreoffice writer. After all this, I ran sudo apt-get install Libreoffice again, alas, to no effect.
Previously, Libreoffice opened several 180MB binary files OK, and I could read them and then save them (at Libreoffice's recommendation) as.odf files. Sure, it took a long time, but I was busy doing other chores, so I could just let it grind away on its own.
When Libreoffice tries to open, the Libreoffice logo appears, a progress bar marches across the window, the CPU usage goes up to 26pct ... and that's where it stays ... for as long as I care to wait. To escape, I have to reboot the computer.
How can I restore Libreoffice's functionality ?
I would try to remove the ".libreoffice" directory (a hidden directory) in your home folder.

Alas, there's no .libreoffice" directory there. My Google search suggested the same approach, which sounds perfectly logical.
It's ~/.config/libreoffice.
(Don't delete the whole .config folder, delete only the libreoffice folder inside it.)
also remember to enable seeing hidden folders.

That did the trick. Now Libreoffice writer will open a 574MB Inbox file, but, alas, even after expanding Libreoffice's access to RAM to 200MB, the file never fully opens, even after 18 hours of trying ... the hard drive activity light stays on "forever." At least, this particular file is readable - not all # signs like that first one - and dates to December 1997. Liberoffice counted 52,259 pages, 21,205,369 words, and 450,521,385 characters, but I couldn't nudge the hard drive to stop trying to do something, or continue counting. It had gone silent when I gave up and restarted the computer.
