Hello everyone,

I wish to buy a netbook with Trisquel. I have the following requirements:

1. No Windows preinstalled.
2. Long battery life, e.g. at least 5 hours and preferably at least 8 hours.
3. Ability to install Trisquel with everything including wifi working out of the box (i.e. Lemote Leeyong probably doesn't fit this requirement). Trisquel pre-installed is obviously preferable.
4. Light, e.g. around 1 Kg.
5. Small screen, e.g. not more than 12'.
6. Ships to Israel.
7. Hebrew keyboard.
8. USB port.
9. Kensington Security Slot or other method to protect from theft.

Other non essential requirements:
10. Works with Compiz.
11. Free bios.
12. HD GPU accelerated playback (is this even possible using free software?)
13. Ability to use a 16:9 resolution when connecting to an external monitor. (My current laptop - Lenovov 3000 N100 - cannot display 16:9 resolutions correctly on an external monitor.)
14. Includes a webcamera.
15. Includes a CD/DVD drive or CD/DVD writer.
16. SDHC card reader.

Does anyone know where I can buy a netbook that meets these requirements? Thank you for your help.

YeeLoong doesn't fit 2 (only about 2 hours), 3 (Trisquel doesn't support
MIPS, gNewSense doesn't have 2d acceleration there, also webcam
doesn't/didn't work), not sure about 6 or 7, no 10 (the SMI712 graphics
card has no 3d acceleration, only 2d with patched newer driver than in
gNS), no 12, no 13 with gNS unless passing custom options for the kernel
(should work with newer driver), no 15.

Coreboot website lists few supported laptops, ThinkPad X60 has partial
support, but I don't know if it fits other requirements.

It shouldn't be difficult to find a laptop with 2, 3 not pre-installed,
4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 16 if using something with Atheros wifi card
and Intel not-GMA500 graphics card.

Hi,

I recently came across the EFIKA MX Smartbook by Genesi. It's the only one
I've noticed shipping with a Hebrew keyboard (haven't been looking as you
might suppose).

Not absolutely sure about this one. It comes with Ubuntu, but if the
support is there for the chips you're pretty safe.

Haven't checked that one out

Take a look at;

Found the Hebrew keyboard in their European store (shipping to non-EU
countries);

Oh, completely forgot to mention this; It's an ARM netbook, so it doesn't
really run Trisquel GNU/Linux that well, you might need to opt for Debian
(not installing from contrib and non-free;)) or wait/help out gNewSense
base their distribution off Debian (they've been at this for some time
now).

Øyvind Jensen, thank you for your reply. The computer you linked to uses Ralink RT3070 for wireless, which isn't listed on FSF website as compatible with free software.

Actually it does appear on this page (in the description) as incompatible with free software:

Hello everyone,

I dropped by a local computer shop and they offered me this netbook without Windows and they even offered me a 6-cell battery which should give 8+ hours battery life:
Asus EEE PC 1001PX.
I did a quick google and found the lspci and lsusb output here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Asus_Eee_PC_1001px
More specifically:
lspci

Will everything (webcam, wifi, bluetooth, 3D acceleration) work out of the box if I install Trisquel on this netbook?
The wifi model appears to be the one here (and thus is supported by free software):

You could check at h-node.com or take a live CD or live USB to the
seller and check. It would be nice if you reported the resolts.

It seems very similar in specs to this notebook which is fully supported, so 3D acceleration and wifi should work. The only different parts might be bluetooth and webcamera (I don't even think this model has bluetooth):

I own an Acer Aspire One (D250-1530), it has both wireless and 3D
working. Webcam too :), but no bluetooth :(
Maybe you could take a look, they aren't expensive at all.

So coreboot runs well on it? Or do you still use the bios it was shipped with?

I don't know if Coreboot can be installed. As far as I know only the Lemote YeeLong netbook supports a free bios. All the hardware though is fully supported by free drivers.

Yes. The Yeelong and the OLPC. And you should NOT try installing coreboot (risk of damaging your laptop).

It works with 3D (Compiz was requirement number 10).
