"GNU MediaGoblin is a free software media publishing system for the web. It's a freedom-respecting replacement for sites like Flickr, YouTube, SoundCloud, and Thingiverse. We've come pretty far, but we need you to join our goblin force and help us take back the net! "

Yeah, 55% reached so far. That looks promising. I also love the artwork. :-)

Wow, To make all of this even more exciting, we have also received a 10k matching grant from a generous anonymous donor! This means that all of your donations currently count for double!

You heard that right! As soon as we raise the next 10k (basically, we hit 46k) all donations given during this period double (to 56k)!

I don't understand on how they need $200,000 to build MediaGoblin. Where is all that money going?

Maybe to pay some full-time developers during a year or so (I have no idea if that's actually the case, but it would be good use for the money)?

Free software does not necessary mean no cost and gratis. The fact that
there are developers that work in their spare (hm, hm "spare") time does
not mean that free software should be developed only that way. Free
software is not free of cost. Free software developers dedicating their
time entirely on free software development must be supported
financially. They have to pay their bills after all.

There are several sub projects in MediaGoblin in this campaign that
would take some time to be analyzed, implemented, tested and bug-fixed.
That takes time during which the developers would need money to live.
Some of the tasks are complex matter.

time * payment = total amount for living

Some of the big projects have financial support that is just not so
obvious.

I don't get it why proprietary software can cost a lot of money while
when such an important free software project makes a campaign and will
probably will prove how the money were spent, some people start to ask
questions.

Free software in general must be supported financially. There is nothing
wrong with that and is not in against the concept of free software.

Yes, in free software campaigns, you see where the money goes. You can see how many developers are working in the project, how much they gain in their free software job, and how much you and others are currently paying for the project. Then you realize how much, the propriety software, are swindling you.

And yes, free software developers deserve to have a good salary for their work, they must be encourage and supported by us, the community who wants to use their software.

They only need 35k for the 1.0 release.
