Mic won't work for voice chat - running Trisquel 6 on Acer Aspire One

He mihi mahana ki a koutou
Warm greetings to you all
New to the forums, but been using Trisquel 6.0 for a couple of years, on an Acer Aspire One mini-laptop (Atom N270 1.6 GHz, 1GB RAM, 160 GB hard drive) which I bought new about 5 years ago. Had a couple of strange little bugs but mostly it works well. I'm running it
One persistent nuisance though is that my built-in mic won't work with any voice chat software. It works in Sound Recorder, so I know the mic hardware is fine, and Trisquel is capable of supporting it, but it doesn't work with Skype, Hangouts, Mumble, any of the WebRTC demos I've tried, or Subrosa (*not* endorsing Skype or Hangouts just mentioning that I've tried them).
I've asked Dr DuckDuckGo, but nobody else seems to have this issue, or I'm not using the right keywords. Any suggestions?
I did a search. There are several posts dealing with Bubbuntu and acer one (not your exact model but they're all very similar I guess). Here are the links I found. I didn't read them (just the first one). I have no idea if they suggest installing some proprietary driver. If they do.. don't!! And don't try skype! skype is spying on its users and selling their data. That is at least what I've read on several websites, and being proprietary software and owned by microshit it wouldn't surprise me if it was so, better yet, I really think it does so! Proprietary software is very bad for several other reasons. I hope those links can give you an idea and point you in the right direction!

Thanks SuperTramp83 for your suggestions and links. I did try a few of the methods detailed in the links but no success with Trisquel 6. Then recently, as mentioned in other threads, I dual-booted Trisquel 7 on the same machine.
Eureka! I managed to get Mumble working on Trisquel 7. Next steps are to try some video conferencing apps in Trisquel 7, and to try again with Trisquel 6, and see if whatever it was that fixed the problem has been backported.
Here's a few programs you might want to try https://www.fsf.org/campaigns/priority-projects/#Replaceskype
