Hi. I tried to install a proprietary driver but ld and binutils aren't installed; I'd like to know why they aren't and suggestions on how to install my nvidia graphics driver.

Hello,

As the Trisquel project and community are dedicated to the ideas of software freedom, no one here will help you install a proprietary driver. From my understanding the free driver should be good enough.

Yeah then "you guys here" are too religious. The free driver is insufficient and perhaps someone can help me configure it to meet my needs. Software freedom...I am allowed to and will install the NVIDIA driver, continue to use my Apple iPod Touch, and still be a member and supporter of the FSF.

That if somebody has knowledge of how I can accomplish my goal and refuses to help me, such behavior is disgusting and contradictory to the FSF. Helping others is a great way to spread your campaign. Hiding your own knowledge is useless.

People here understand your needs. But people here understand too that is
about freedom, literally freedom. people from whatever company that build
privative software(/hardware), are trying to break your freedom, you
aren't free to learn or improve the stuff they does, even if you never
will do it, you should be free to do it. Then People here, try to protect
and respect everybody freedom, even your freedom, If you want to do that
(install privative software) you can do it (like you can say yes when
somebody try to make you do something that you don't want to do or even
something that you don't know if want to do), you can search the whole web
a way to install your NVIDIA privative driver, but, not here... It's not
about be religious, or cultist or a fanatic way, it's just freedom...

Did you tried the free driver yet? Which part was wrong? We cannot help
you if you don't give us more details about was is going wrong.

Of course, you have the freedom of install the privative NVIDIA driver.
Legally, except some very important human rights (and unluckily there are
cases when it's not true), we have the freedom of loosing any of our own
freedoms. You can do that in those aspects that you consider, of course,
and nobody has the moral right to judge you (except you). However, we, and
probably you that supports software freedom, want not to recommend anyone
to loose their freedom. Nobody wants others loose their freedoms. So, it
doesn't matter the software that some one use, no matter who, the
important thing is that every one, as a community, cannot recommend or
help people to loose their freedoms. We have to only teach the correct
way, although it is not easy in some places yet.

Kind regards

Look at it this way, proprietary software restricts in many ways, "But hey it gives lots of features, right!", like be-dazzled steel handcuffs with a built in wifi detector.

I, don't want to assist you placing those shiny cuffs on.

Now to my response to some of your post. :-)

Tone: Subtle and respectful

Note: Won't speak for others, these views are my own.

Yeah then "you guys here" are too religious.

I appreciate freedom, advocate it, and don't want others to lose theirs.

The free driver is insufficient and perhaps someone can help me configure it to meet my needs.

Someone here can assist with the configuration of the libre(free) driver, if that's what you mean. - What part would you need help with?

That if somebody has knowledge of how I can accomplish my goal and refuses to help me, such behavior is disgusting and contradictory to the FSF.

Not sure how not helping someone install/use proprietary software is contrary to the anything of the FSF.

Helping others is a great way to spread your campaign.

The campaign I strive for is Free Software, not "Help people use non-libre/non-free software.".

Hiding your own knowledge is useless.

I agree, the company behind the card you use should be told the same.

Last but not least.

Why would I continue to use this distro if I cannot get help on the forums!??

The Free Distribution Guideline does not allow to advice people how to install nonfree Software. Trisquel is not locked down in any meaning to prevent the installation of nonfree Software. Users that want to install nonfree Software are only on their own. If we would write manuals how to install nonfree Software we could simply add nonfree Repositories, but then the Distribution would be non-free according to the Free Distribution Guidelines.

Noone here will judge you if you use Apple Products or other nonfree Software, we only advice you to look what those Companies do with your rights and your data.

It doesn't matter what the Free Distribution Guidelines are. You
shouldn't justify your actions based on what the people who wrote the
Free Distribution Guidelines say. What matters is your choice to help
or not help him install non-free software.

Yes that is what I'm getting at. It's simple. I'm a new Trisquel user. Why would I continue to use this distro if I cannot get help on the forums!??

You can get help and help others in the forums, we try doing it the best
we can. However, we respect you, and we cannot offer you that kind of
"help", because we believe that teaching people to loose its control over
its own hardware is not something good.

I hope you understand the point. I admit that at first time it is bit
annoying, but I'm sure that if you understand the importance of free
software, you'll agree with us that the only way that world's dynamics
respects people's freedom is to fight against privative software and don't
accept it as a solution.

Okay so, everybody thank you for your replies, I appreciate the discussion and am glad to know there are diverse members at trisquel. That said, now I'd like help learning about the driver thats making my graphics work. I need to increase the resolution to 1980 x 1080 but can't seem to do so. Let me know what kind of information I can provide to make resolving my issue easier.

My notebook is upside-down an I'm considering swapping my hard drives out for the one with windows. I don't want to do that, it's sad. I want to format that hard drive.
