PDF compressor

Hi everyone! I would like to know if there's a libre program for reducing pdfs size. All programs I've found are proprietary or SaaS, and we all know that's unjust.
Thank you in advance! :)
Hi Majin,
A while back I searched for something related and in one of the forums the use of ghostscript was recommended. I've used it and so far I am satisfied. I am not savvy, so others forum members might help, but that's how I've been using it:
In terminal:
gs -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dPDFSETTINGS=/ebook -sOutputFile=OUTPUT-FILE-NAME.pdf FILE-TO-REDUCE.pdf
If I'm not mistaken, you could change the size/resolution by changing the -dPDFSETTINGS variable - please check: https://www.ghostscript.com/doc/9.23/VectorDevices.htm
I just tried your method vs ps2pdf, and your method worked better, reduced the file size significantly further.
I once tried LibreOffice Draw to "decompose" PDF files.
Normally, PDF files are considered "non-compressible". To reduce PDF file size, I tried to reduce picture size (cropping, down-sampling, etc.).
Use ps2pdf. It is part of the ghostscript package.
I while ago, I have created a snippet for myself.
Here you can read about it https://adem.ayt.ac/p/2018-07-18_compressing_scanned_pdfs
It was on parabola. But should also work on Trisquel.
I like your script. However, it could be improved, imho. In "behavior" (commands preferably keep the input still, print a message when something unexpected happens and only in this case, accept --help and -h), in features (processing several files at once looks useful, portability to other shells is nice, removing the output if gs's execution fails, e.g., if an input file is not a PDF) and in "style" (removing the .PDF or .pdf extension before appending "-compressed.pdf" looks nicer to me, 'ls' is not the simpler way to get the size, kind of useless variables, accessed with unnecessary curly brackets). Here is "my" version of this script:
#!/bin/sh
if [ -z "$1" -o "$1" = "--help" -o "$1" = "-h" ]
then
printf "Usage: $(basename $0) file [ files ... ]
"
exit
fi
for file in "$@"
do
out="$(printf "$file" | sed -e 's/\.PDF$//' -e 's/\.pdf$//')"-compressed.pdf
if gs -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dPDFSETTINGS=/ebook -dNOPAUSE -dQUIET -dBATCH -sOutputFile="$out" "$file"
then
if [ $(stat -c %s "$file") -le $(stat -c %s "$out") ]
then
printf "$file: compressing increases the size!
" >&2
rm "$out"
fi
else
rm "$out"
fi
done
Feel free to distribute it under whatever free software license you want. And, again, do not get me wrong: I like your script.
My script was just good for my own. But you have brought it to next level. I will adapt my script and use yours as it is more complete and userfriendlier then what I have written then.
Thank you for your input and contribution. :)
Sorry, but when I try to open the link I get error 502 :-(
I tried this "Nautilus script".

To compress dozens of PDF files as long as the source document is
available (ODT) I compress images within it by hand one by one with
LibreOffice. To do so, I do right-click a picture > Compress > a new
dialog appears > I set out compression > I click Calculate so I know
resulting size > click OK > picture compressed. I teach online course
and this manual way is the way I do to make transcripts. From a 20MB
raw document, I can make it smaller to 3MB or so as PDF. I share this
to you and I hope this could be useful. Thanks.
Thanks to everyone! I tried with LibreOffice draw and GhostScript, and the latter worked very nice. Tomorrow I'll try with 'Nautilus Script'
