A Bulgarian folk dancer?
I've seen the photo several times. It's the founding father of our movement. He sure was original even before he grew a beard and put on some weight.
That's his workplace -- the MIT AI Labs -- where he spent the better part of his formative years. The first place he called his home.
Yes! young, thin, no beard, short hair, in Bulgarian dance garb, dancing with a robot!
Got it from this page about hacking on Stallman's site: https://stallman.org/articles/on-hacking.html#
There are only few photographs of the young RMS. I've been looking for others without much success.
Then they introduced snakes in his paradise and he lost his "home". He's been looking for a new substitute ever since.
I think he used to sleep there right next to those mainframes. The cave was cooled and I guess it's why RMS has kept preference for airconditioning even when he travels.
Steven Levy's Hackers deals with the hacker culture at MIT and Stallman's paradise lost.
The one person who was most affected by the schism, and its effect on the AI lab, was Richard Stallman. He grieved at the lab's failure to uphold the Hacker Ethic. RMS would tell strangers he met that his wife had died, and it would not be until later in the conversation that the stranger would realize that this thin, plaintive youngster was talking about an institution rather than a tragically lost bride.
Haha. Yes, I posted it on diaspora months ago. Superdancer Stallman :)
Holy shit I'm gonna have nightmares tonight.
awesome +1 Alij
