Repeater / Access point

The wifi signal in my house is only strong in one side due to concrete and pipes in the centre. Though I am not sure, I have the impression that a repeater or an extra access point might help.
Is there software wise a freedom aspect that has to be considered when buying/using such?
thou, oh beer, art me savior, thou boost me brain cells and me wifi signal. Oh beer, oh beer, when I drink you, I have no fear. Thou art me best mate, when I sip you, my belly swells with pleasure, I enjoy thou in wonderful leisure \o/
*it just werks :)
That is a cool solution. Unfortunately it will not solve my problem, since my router is at the centre of my house - I just need it to serve the two sides of my house equally well.
How much boost does it give?

Apparently it can go as far as 60% :)
Some wireless routers can be reflashed with OpenWRT.
TP-LINK TL-MR3020 is one such router.

TP-LINK WR902AC is another reflashable supported by OpenWRT/LEDE.

***EDIT***
TP-LINK MR3020 supported by LibreCMC.

Public Safety Announcement: *** Anything with 802.11ac requires proprietary software ***
(which OpenWRT happily provides, of course as part of the blobs inside the kernel named Linux)
What you are looking for is LibreCMC
From the LibreCMC FAQ:
What is wrong with OpenWRT/LEDE?
Some people have the view that everyone should have the freedom to control the software that runs on devices they own. If any compromises are made, then some of the benefits of Free Software go out the window. The OpenWRT/LEDE project does help give users more freedom than they would otherwise have, but some of the supported devices and packages are non-free.
