Replicant phones for sale

I have a few phones pre-installed with Replicant for Sale
the current price £100 ($156.04 at the time of this post)
(the margin in the price is due to the effort installing replicant on the phone)
The model of phone is the Samsung galaxy S(i9000)
You can view some screen-shots of the phone Here
I can also do other models of phones if people request them but obviously for a different price
Also please note the website i have linked to "Qibre" is under construction and not useable yet so please don’t try
buying from that site.
So if you are interested in one of these phones or would like more information please post on this forum or Email me.
Since you are advertising and selling products, Could I release my stomach gas that is UNDER THE GPL license agreement for personal FLATULENCE?
You have been troll..
troll:
"One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument"
Let's assume he meant to write "trolled" as in he was the one who trolled your post.
I would love to get one of those, but the price is too high for me right now (i am broke and have some stuff to pay already). Still, I would make two suggestions for you:
1. Copy the "device support status" page from Replicant to your page, so people can know what will and will not work on their phone (without having to search for it in Replicant page).
2. Pics are good, but maybe make a video or two showing how the device works with replicant, how fast it is, maybe show off some apps from F-Droid so people know what to expect...?
Just my two cents :) hope it goes well. If the price lowers and my financial situation gets better, I will consider buying one from you.
1.
i have a link to the replicant status page
here:
http://qibre.co.uk/shop/phones/index.php
do you think this is enough?
2.
i plan to do this in the future after the site is complete
UUuugh ggr aahhh uff ff Y ye yes. Tis cominn nnn uuhg gr. Something is com.... comin outa myass. YIiaaAhh uhgDr. Yes, here it is. It's a sheet saying:

and Jodiendo

LMAO
I would love to get one of these, but I made the stupid decision to switch to Verizon a while back. :\
They're CDMA-only...
Nice site, though! Are you planning on getting a domain name?
the domain name is qibre.co.uk but its currently just a redirect
i will fix this later
as stated before the website is not yet functional
as i need to get the payment working
Since MetroPCS plans don't have contracts wouldn't you be able to simply swap the sim to your new phone? I don't have them personally so I'm curious.
I'm actually waiting for my Verizon contract to end (20 more days, thank the heavens) and am considering moving to MetroPCS or Cricket so I can avoid being roped into another expensive contract.
When you say flip phone and grannyphone, you mean a dumbphone (in opposition to smartphone)?
Because I'm pretty sure that these are tracking devices too, just not Android.
Not precisely sure, as in "why" specifically, but bottom line is it's no different.
I know that as far as mobile phones go the most "free" phones are actually the ones running Android or Replicant. I switched to a "dumbphone" for a while because I was feeling trapped using a Nexus on Verizon, however quickly realized I had made a mistake because every piece of software on the dumbphone was proprietary and I was afraid even to check my email. At least with any Android distribution you have the option of installing free software applications.
This is why I'm currently waiting for my Galaxy S2 to arrive so I can install Replicant rather than relying on a de-googled AOSP rom.
Ah, that's right, it's even a better option.
I use a modified ROM (Lambda ROM),
and I still randomly remove parts that I suppose are google-infected.
So I often break it and reinstall it.
I doubt I could go as deep in the system on a dumbphone.
Also I'm quite satisfied with F-Droid.
Some apps I couldn't find exact replacement for are
actually quite satisfactory as a replacement.
i heard that alot of android distros including cyanogenmod
have spy-ware in the system and replicant removes these
source:

Yes, Replicant is definitely a better choice.
But I doubt I can make it work on my device (Lenovo A820) :
There's no non-official CyanogenMod port for my phone (since that's what Replicant is based on),
yet custom kernels exist (so I suppose they can be installed),
and there ar a few AOSP versions (http://www.needrom.com/category/lenovo/serial-a/a820/).
One even has a CyanogenMod calculator included (whatever that is besides a simple calculator).
I could try to make a Cyanogenmod version myself I suppose.
Maybe I'll try it someday, but since it could take a lot of time without any guarantee of success,
it's probably better to go for supported devices.
can replicant phones use WiFi?
currently wifi requires non-free firmware on all the supported devices
but you can use mobile data and you can connect to the internet with a usb cable connected to a pc
could be a interesting idea to see if you could use a usb wifi adaptor with the phone but i have never tried this
you can find a full compatibility list here:
http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/ReplicantStatus
Thank you a lot for the info mr. tomlukeywood.
And yes, I was also curious to see i the Thinkpenguin usb-wifi would do the job: perhaps should I ask Chris?
The good thing is that Replicant works on models that have good modem isolation (at least not proved as being weak),
which is what matters the most.
(TL;DR: It's a quick summary of the downsides, but I also have a question at the end).
But, to quote from the Replicant website (http://www.replicant.us/freedom-privacy-security-issues.php):
"Even though telephony-enabled mobile devices hold a tremendous potential for spying on the user,
they are not the only tools that can be used to spy in the mobile world.
Most mobile telephony operators keep track of every message and call made
by the user but also gather the real time position of users, filter their mobile data networks
and provide security agencies unlimited access to that data, to an extent that depends on the operator,
the country and the government."
----------
so that needs a political answer, not a technical one (even though it seems that workarounds exist). Good to know.
"Privacy/security cannot be reliably achieved, but it is possible to get close to it by choosing a device
that is not proven to have bad modem isolation, provides a reliable way of deactivating the modem
or doesn't feature any modem at all, in addition to running software that is as free as possible
and following some general good advice.
If compromising on privacy/security is not an option, or anything serious is at stake
(e.g. political activism or journalism in a sensitive area), it is advised to avoid using a telephony-enabled device at all."
----------
Essentially, comparing Replicant with Trisquel isn't so far-fetched, even with a librebooted X2OO.
It's not perfect, but it's the best that can be obtained.
Regarding those workarounds, as a secondary option (still with Replicant I suppose), this page
(https://blog.torproject.org/blog/mission-impossible-hardening-android-security-and-privacy)
suggests the use of a tablet (hopefully something smaller, similar to an ipod touch)
without a modem. So strictly with wifi use.
I find this idea interesting, but the huge downside to not having a phone on a daily basis
is staying in touch with business partners/colleagues/bosses, and most of all
not being able to access an emergency call from loved ones.
Is there a way to set up (no need for encryption in that case) automatic mail retrieval
which would be done automatically when on wifi?
And which would be launched with one touch from the sender, without
going through all the steps of opening k9mail, opening the new mail window,
writing whatever (SOS + location maybe prewritten mails),
and sending?
I'm thinking of some kind of shortcut, maybe several for different locations,
in the form of an app button.
NEWS UPDATE:
I have just about (unless anyone thinks otherwise) completed the Website!
and you can now buy stuff from it!
I spent a long time trying to get stripe to work
so i could process payments on my server but it was i was getting nowhere with it
So i decided to use a external payment method.
the one i chose was Ealtbay as it requires no JavaScript and has a decent privacy policy.
i have also as i think the price was way to high dropped it from £100 to £60($94.22 at time of post).
also i will be shipping worldwide and Samsung Galaxy S2's will be coming soon!
So if anyone has any feedback about the website or questions then please leave a post!
Awesome! When you get ahold of a Galaxy S2 I will gladly purchase one!
i ordered a S2 yesterday!
Update:
very sorry for the inconvenience but the person who i ordered the Galaxy S2 from said they have turned it on and it turned out to be a Galaxy Ace...
i am currently bidding on other S2's!
No worries! I've been trying to find one myself since my original order fell through (a risk you take with eBay sometimes).
just to let you know i have purchased one
and i am currently waiting for it to arrive!
Good to hear! Do you know what you will be charging for the S2?
£80
€ 109.74 (at time of post)
$ 122.02 (at time of post)
(JPY)¥ 14653.16 (at time of post)
C$ 161.36 (at time of post)
A$ 173.98 (at time of post)
(CNY)¥ 775.70 (at time of post)
CHF 118.68 (at time of post)
S$ 173.14 (at time of post)
HK$ 945.85 (at time of post)
The S2 has just arrived and i am installing Replicant on it now.
it should be available for purchase within the next 12 hours.
Wow, you're doing this quite professional! seems a new business just got startet.
A few remarks:
Is quibre really a registred trademark? I'm not familiar with uk law, but if it's not, then you should eventually remove the "tm" from the logo or otherwise there could be lawsuites of the ass.
Besides: if you take better care of your spelling, you will appear to be way more trustworthy and attract way more people with almost no additional work.
And I would remove the single question in the faqs until there are some other, serious ones.
But besides a great idea!
I don't know about the UK, but in the US no registration is required for the "TM" symbol. The "R" inside a circle means *registered* trademark.
I'm not a lawyer, by the way.
What is the performance like on the Galaxy S phones with replicant? I've heard good things about the S2 as far as battery life, etc and I don't use my phone for much more than calling, texting, and the occasional Wikipedia and forum post so I don't need a brand new 8 core monstrosity.
"What is the performance like on the Galaxy S phones with replicant?"
if you just need it for the things you mentioned calling texting PDF documents some lightweight games etc then the Samsung Galaxy S will be fine
Thanks for the video it looks like it runs very well. I think I'm still set on the S2 though because I've already got a case for one I'm just missing the phone!
It seems that seems the screen is smaller than the S2's,
so the battery life is a bit better in the S.
Plus there's always the option of reducing screen brightness,
and even having an external portable charger.
Update:
There is now a tablet available for purchase at http://www.qibre.co.uk
the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0
