Last night's local news featured some local businesses that have for some non existent random reason, or maybe for some hidden nefarious reason been excluded from Google search results. It is reported that this is happening to small businesses all over the US. Of course, my hackles were raises at the mention of Google, but this is just too much!

So, to links for Startpage and Searx Instances on my homepage, I have added

AOL Search
Brave Search
Duckduckgo
Gibiru
Qwant
Swisscows

I value privacy but I also do not want censorship happening to my searches. Any thoughts?

Yes, absolutely, imagine how many people have been using bing/google/baidu for so long, people are aware that the search results are altered, and now, these major providers even have a.i. systems that attempt to engage "the audience" the users, and tell them for example, the definitions of major pivotal events in history, or the definitions of technological systems, organizations, in other words defining the truth, and pressuring people to limit their potentially more significant ideas.

It's such a huge subject matter, we could sit here right now, and start writing a book all about it, with hundreds of pages, and really really bad reference material, thanks to "the internet" which is mainly visible to us through "the magic of search"

A major problem is that these providers have integrated themselves into the web largely, so they have influence and a presence everywhere you go, with the capability to leverage these qualities in ways that smaller technological organizations couldn't even begin to dream of.

You could also try Mullvad Leta. It is a privacy front-end for Google search and for Brave search. https://leta.mullvad.net/

SearXNG seems to be about the best if you can work with it.

I altered my homepage after looking at the article Jorah posted

Search

Duckduckgo.com
MoJeek.com
Marginalia-search.com - New
old-search.Marginalia.nu
LyricsTranslate.com
searx.space
search.aol.com
Qwant.com
leta.mullvad.net

Got rid of Startpage. Duckduckgo can yield the groogle results and mojeek and marginalia seem to work well having their own index. I'll try Mullvad Leta for Brave results.

Contrary to the listed sites (including the default version of DuckDuckGo), https://html.duckduckgo.com does not send proprietary JavaScript, according to GNU LibreJS.

searx instances, startpage and duckduckgo are the best ones I know of.

Searx is especially safe as long as you don't get one that is "compromised"

For me, this was mostly about getting different results. Startpage and Duckduckgo basically are Google as far as the results are concerned and Google seems to be guiding people to read what it approves of. Mojeek and the Marginalia definitely bring up stuff google doesn't. It's about setting myself free from Google censorship.
