Tray icon missing

The tray icon for my VPN has suddenly gone missing. However my VPN is still working fine and all the VPN app settings are unchanged.
The applets for my firewall, network, sound, etc. are still present and working.
I think this happened after a recent update.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you tried (re)adding the "Indicator Applet" to the panel? As far as I remember, you can right-click on an empty space on the panel to "add an element", if the panel is "unlocked". I am unsure of the terminology, because I do not personally use MATE (but have customized such panels for my parents). Maybe the "Indicator Applet" is called "Notification Area" or "Notification Applet" or ...
I fixed it. My solution was to quit the app, remove and reinstall.
On Mate, the area with the tray icons is called the "panel". Unfortunately it seems that you can only add items that are already built in to Mate. But re-installation of the VPN app fixed it.
