Hi,

First of all this is my first post here and I would like to start with a huge THANK YOU to the entire community who made this possible. At first by showing me the way and then helping me down the line with documentation on how to become a free user.

I'm not a programer (I work as a sys admin) but I want to learn C code better. Until I will work my way around I will have to rely on you guys helping me with this question: how safe it is to run trisquel 6 these days ? I understand I will never get updates and this is somehow disturbing in a sense that I know there are ways for others to access my data. Triesquel 7 is not working as better as trisquel 6 on this X200 and also 7 does not gives us updates, just that 7 is in a better shape.

I simply love the freedom that I have and I will never go back from it, but I also don't want to don't sleep at night knowing that others might sneek in because there are holes in the applications that I use that will never get patched.

What are you thoughts about this ?

Thank you !

P.S. Sorry for the misspelling that I don't see and can't correct

>What are you thoughts about this ?

My thoughts are: you shouldn't use a distro that doesn't provide timely security updates (both 6 and 7 are bad in this regard) IF security and privacy of your system and the data on such system is your priority.

You say 6 runs better? How better? Faster? More stable? Feel free to elaborate this point for us.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the replies !

@SuperTramp83: I've noticed that sometimes in Trisquel 7 the key strokes are not identified. It's not because of the keyboard because it's not behaving similar in Trisquel 6 for example or any other OSes I've had on this machine. Also the feeling is like the system is not getting the IRQ.
Beside that annoying thing that practically forces you to sometimes hit twice a key, the system also randomly freezez when performing some simple tasks. For example it froze when copying from a USB.

All those combined with my nostalgic personality makes me stick with 6.

I don't have data very very important it's just important for me. For example I always document a process when I'm doing it for the first time (exp. setting up SPF and DKIM), so the HDD it's full of these kind of howtos.

The behaviours described might be due to the fact I've selected the generic kernel during installation. I didn't found documentation on that topic so I've went with that option.

If Trisquel is not an option at this moment, what are your alternatives ?

Thank you !

Hardware supports depends on the kernel. Thanks to jxself, it is easy to install a newer version of Linux-libre on any GNU/Linux distribution that uses APT (including all versions of Trisquel): https://jxself.org/linux-libre/

And, yes, you will get updates.

Hmm, I see. 7 is buggy on your hardware. It happens :/

Backup your data then and use 6 or try any other free distro, there are a few out there.

https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html

There's even more. Debian by default is 100% libre (just make sure to keep it that way, that is check the license of anything you install outside of it's only repository, 'main', which contains only free software). Fedora can be easily made 100% libre by installing a libre linux kernel and removing the default kernel it ships with.

cheers

How can people not running Trisquel say they receive no updates of Trisquel ;-) umm ? Debian Fans ...

Any fresh install of Trisquel 7 has updates, if you aren't getting updates then something is wrong..(that new install needs those updates to perform properly).

the best way is to open a terminal and update your system

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

If you want more recent software you can install and try the latest Trisquel 8 Beta version.(with lightweight Mate Desktop).
http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/

or a community respin of Triskel with a Cinnamon desktop.
Uruk GNU/Linux 2.0 (Alpha)as dicussed here
https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/uruk-gnulinux-20-alpha

or simply wait till it is possible to do a distribution upgrade from your Trisquel 7 to Trisquel 8 when it will be proposed to you.

I did not say updates, I said **timely security updates**. Trisquaello not receiving those updates is a very well known fact here. There's no need to use the OS to be aware of it, especially if you visit this forum once or twice each day, which I do, being that I like this forum, as strange as it may seem to you knowing I've been using Debian for the last 3 years. Look for Midori and Pidgin for instance, just to name a few.

It's still getting updates, both from Trisquel project, and from upstream.

@SuperTramp83
**timely security updates**.
You are correct, and i am aware of that ;-)
https://trisquel.info/fr/issues/20634
You could add Icedove or .deb packages that are not installable (missing dependancies) on Trisquel 7 like the recently mentioned Rings.

Trisquel 8 Alpha with more recent software has been released, we should encourage new users try it out.

Yeah, Mangy, you can do that manually or you can install a distro that takes care of it, as it should.

How about this? Have you received an update for this?

Thanks a lot SuperTramp83 and Mangy Dog. I've got your points. I didn't wanted to touch a sensible cord here. I think it was understood from my initial post that I'm asking for advice and points of reference so I can increase my knowledge on the subject.

I used this forum for pointers because I personally think you cannot get better answers in any other place. I just wanted to see, from people with way more experience on what does it mean to be free, how is the sensation. How heavy is the burden ? What things I need to understand in order to be 100% free ?

One of the things I've discovered as a freedom trainee was that it is not very easy to be free and I think this is also one of the main frustration of the community. If more people would be interested on this subject, then the dream to be 100% free and don't suffer from any restrictions, because you've chosen freedom, would be so much closer to becoming reality.

I am switching back to Trisquel 7 and will follow the advice to install .deb packages.

Thanks again for all of your help !

>what does it mean to be free, how is the sensation.

It's good. Knowing that you are doing the right thing is always a good feeling.

>How heavy is the burden

Only thing I miss, and I'm very honest here, is some of the proprietary games I used to play. All the rest I can do on my system as I did before, only better, much better.

>What things I need to understand in order to be 100% free ?

Not much at all. You need a libre distro by default and you need to make sure you check the license of any software (addons, plugins, drivers, firmware included) you install outside of your distro's repository.
This page is very useful -> https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#SoftwareLicenses

>One of the things I've discovered as a freedom trainee was that it is not very easy to be free

Unless your job requires you to use nonfree software (unfortunately this happens quite often), it is actually very easy **provided you really care**.

Have fun!

;-)

I am switching back to Trisquel 7 and will follow the advice to install .deb packages.

I did not mean install everything via .deb packages, most software is available in the Trisquel repositaries with your Synaptic Package Manager.

a .deb package exemple is you can install the latest Firejail .deb package(https://firejail.wordpress.com/), but not Ring, because Ring no longer makes available a less recent version for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS derivatives.(https://ring.cx/en/download/gnu-linux).But you can install it on Trisquel 8 (Ubuntu 16.04LTS).

Debian has an armada of developpers, whereas Trisquel is a very small team.
There are numerous threads about Debian here,

Additionally, for GNU Ring, there is a test package that you can use in
your current copy of Trisquel 7, by installing GNU Guix package manager
([[https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/]]), and then installing the test
package. It's not officially in the GNU Guix repositories due to overuse
of patching by GNU Ring project.

As of 2017-07-29, the latest version of the test package can be found
here:
[[https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/guix-devel/2017-06/msg00120.html]]. Also
be aware that you will have to deal with the ${XDG_DATA_DIRS} variable
in a special way (slightly different to what GNU Guix would suggest you
to do when installing the packages):

The problem is that my brain was used to getting things easy. Probably they wanted to keep things easy for the user, so that he doesn't ask questions about software that he install on his machine. This is I believe Windows, mac, Ubuntu's philosophy. Keep it simple for the user and as hidden as possible.

I've tried to discuss these things with people around me and my conclusion was that they don't care about their freedom. They just want things to work and this is what others exploit.

If the Free Software Foundation were able to produce an alternative that is easy to use and also 100% free then the impact would be different.

I am trying to follow FSF's advice and try to contribute to existing projects but will be a long process for me because I lack a lot of knowledge at this point.

Thanks again for all your pointers, time and explanations!

You are welcome ;-)

It is much easier, better for your privacy & more secure to install software on Trisquel than on Windows or any other proprietary Operating System.

Synpatic Package Manager is a great tool that serves to search install, remove, update, repair broken packages from Trisquel's repositary.

Trisquel is dedicated to beginners.

What a ride it has been ! I've finally managed to install libreboot + trisquel 7. I've been searching/ordering the components over a week now and only Saturday night I've started to work on my x200.
But I feel very proud and happy of my system.

I hope the Free Software never dies and gets more and more supporters.

Enjoying my freedom from here :)
