Trisquel Mate desktop fails to load

Thinkpad x60, SSD- 44% full
On boot up the desktop is the last to load and it hangs with a spinning wheel until I click on places/desktop, then it loads the desktop icons. This happens a lot now. Been happening for a long time.
Is this common ? Is there a fix ?
