TRISQUEL 10 Startup Error
TRISKEL AMD Plasma 64bit ISO

Tested 4th February 2022 in Australia

In case you want some failure data the following data is supplied.
I was not able to fully boot thru via the Live Disc with the result listed below.

[ 116.552518] 0000:07:00.0: missing free firmware (Non Free firmware Loading is disabled)

[116.552679] r8169 0000:07:00.0 unable to load firmware * (DEBLOBBED) * (-2)

[ 116.868854] usb 10-2: Fatal- failed to load firmware

I was trying to do a test run with TRISQUEL and got the errors above. I was using the Supplied ISO via a USB Stick running VENTOY configured stick. (which is being used to boot other Distro’s ok)

The TRISQUEL startup screen did a Disc Check and there were no defects.

I was using an AMD 8150 eight Core CPU at 3.6ghz
8gb RAM
AMD Radeon HD 7800 Graphics

Good Luck with a resolution.

WIN10 problem afterwards with the ISO as well, I tried to delete the ISO from WIN10 Downloads Folder and WINDOWS would not allow the ISO to be deleted because it said it was "active in System" ???? then powered down the laptop and rebooted with the same result. I ended up doing a "SYSTEM RESTORE" on WIN10 laptop and then was able to delete the ISO normally from the Laptop ???

Laptop used was an ASUS Intel Core I7 2.2Ghz,RAM 16Gb WIN 10 version 21H2,build 19044.1503
It looks like WIN10 and the ISO system were interacting even though the ISO wasn't installed or being used by the laptop. I also noticed that the Laptop was running slower with normal tasks while the ISO was sitting in Downloads.

INFORMATION SUPPLIED FOR YOUR USE IN CASE YOU WANT TO DO SOME DEBUGGING.

I would try to use an empty USB Stick and use Balena Etcher for flashing. Install Balena Etcher on Windows and then flash the Stick with Trisquel. This should work without problems.
Then booting into Trisquel should work also. Next try Trisquel live to test if everything is working fine.

You may be focusing on a red herring. It is known that the r8169 kernel module (which is used to control your ethernet ports) loads a non-free firmware. This is, of course, not included with Trisquel but you may still find that your ethernet port works without that firmware regardless. In any event that's about your ethernet port and the firmware message doesn't really provide any clues about what's going on with your booting problems. So, sending this back to you more more information.

Windows is horrific. Probably some CD-burning program or Windows media software sprang into action when it saw the new ISO and wouldn't let go of it. Very Windows-ish kind of problem. The solution is usually to find the offending program in the taskmanager and kill it. Or just get rid of Windows. It's not as if Microsoft tech support is going to help you.

Thanks everyone for the Feedback. As suggested I loaded the ISO using Balena Etcher onto another USB Stick instead of using Ventoy 1.0.64 and Trisquel is now working and this REPLY is submitted via TRISQUEL off my Laptop via USB stick. As suggested it appears that the problem was Ventoy Software in this case.

Strangely enough VENTOY works well with other Distro's that are loaded on the Original USB Stick.
The existing Distro's that work are; EMMABUNTUS de4 i686
EXTIX 22.1 64 Bit Deepin
Linux MINT 20.3 Cinnamon
NITRUX Release AMD 64

While I agree with the Comments that WINDOWS was a PROBLEM with the ISO it was not easy to use TASKMANAGER to find how the TRISQUEL ISO was being accessed within the DownLoad Folder.
I had tried using taskmanager BUT COULDN,T FIND A LINK TO THE ISO that"s why i did a system restore.
WINDOWS is not HORRIFIC it has actually come a Long way with WIN10 but like any OS it has a few problems but Linux isn't perfect and there are numerous Distro's on DISTROWATCH that shouldn't be out there. I am running numerous versions of Linux on Desktops and Laptop and some of them are very rough around the edges.

In a GNU/Linux terminal, lsof (LiSt Open Files) followed by the file identifies the processes having it opened. Anyway, as andyprough suggested, end-user applications installed through the package manager are not added to the startup applications and closing the session (no need to reboot) would have been another way (not involving the terminal) to "solve" the problem for a GNU/Linux user.

Windows is at least horrific in the way it treats its customers as products: https://www.fsf.org/windows#abuses

>"and there are numerous Distro's on DISTROWATCH that shouldn't be out there"

a) tell us something we don't know
b) every distro is someone's favorite hobby (except the abandoned ones). Even if it only has an audience of 1 user, it's making someone happy.

>"I am running numerous versions of Linux on Desktops and Laptop and some of them are very rough around the edges."

Agreed. VERY rough.
I think you'll find that Trisquel is very nice though. It has a loving and dedicated and skillful developer group. Many people have been using it for years quite happily.

>"it has actually come a Long way with WIN10"

In one way, yes - Win10 spies on you constantly, much more than Win7 from what I've read. And I've read that Win11 spies on its users even more. I don't know - maybe the general consensus that I'm reading is wrong though. But if it's right, modern Windows versions are to be avoided for more than just their freedom issues.
