what is the best approach to install trisquel to a new machine?
once trisquel 6.0 is released, i definitely wanna go for it.
for the time being should i install trisquel 5.5 or 6.0 alpha?
will either of the two be update/upgradable? will the release version of trisquel 6.0 require a fresh install anyway?

any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance

btw. is there any planned release date?

For that new installation, why not visit
http://devel.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/ and grab the latest version 6!
I've been using it since mid November, and upgrading the thing at least
once a week. When the official release is out, I may do a fresh
install, keeping my current home folder in place.

Cheers,

I am not involved in development, I am just a user. My *personal*
opinion is to advise to go with 6.0. Being that it's based on Ubuntu
12.04 which has been out for some time now, I don't see major stability
issues and it will continue to evolve. Once officially released there
won't be significant differences between installing today + updating
frequently vs. installing fresh whenever it's officially released.

Installing 5.5 now will mean upgrading to 6.0 which I doubt many people
will test - even if there are bug I don't see any fixes coming up for
the upgrade process. "It should work", yes, but you decide if you spend
lots of time chasing a bug/failing an important upgrade or just going
with 6 now.

An important point of using version 6 ASAP is to be able to report bugs
which will actually get a chance of being fixed before it's official.

5.5 should be although I have tested forcing upgrade to a dev version
and it doesn't detect 6.0 so there's now way to test this for now.

6, definitely, it's just standard updates (as opposed to full upgrade)
as I explained above.

"When it's ready" - so no, according to the many previous messages on
this list.

Thank you to both of you!
i take it that the better choice is 6.0alpha by now.
especially the part on:
* upgrading 5.5 to 6.0 will not be tested by many and
* updating 6.0alpha to 6.0 is merely ordinary updating with not much difference to a fresh 6.0 install as well as
* 6.0alpha is used by some people for a few weeks now without major stability issues
convinced me :)

I will be upgrading 5.5 to 6.0, which makes one. I'm sure a lot of users here will also do that.

But I agree that using the alpha might be your best option, although I have never tried doing that myself.

Excellent! And it certainly wouldn't have hurt to have the roadmap published on the trisquel blog...
