I'm running version 5. Is it advisable to switch repos to 5.5, and
dist-upgrade?

Why not simply using the "Update Manager" (in the "System/Administration" menu)?

To decide whether to update, a relevant consideration is the availability of 3D acceleration for you. If so, you can use GNOME Shell, which I consider an improvement (but, as I have already written on this forum, this page is to be read to be efficient with it). I cannot really talk about the 2D fallback.

Generally, yes. But, it really depends on what you're concerned about.

If there's something you need in 5.5 you can always force install an outdated package. Or compile it from source. Compiling isn't as hard as it sounds.

That should work, though, I've found that a clean install of
newly-released Ubuntu-like distros seems to go more quickly and without
problems. If you wish to do an in-place upgrade, you can do

sudo update-manager -d

or

sudo do-release-upgrade

in the terminal. The script takes care of updating the sources list and
upgrading your installed packages.

Thanks for the replies. I encountered some errors along the way but managed to resolve them.

Glad to hear that; hoping you use and enjoy Trisquel.

:) our experience with distribution upgrades is how far back you go. If you try upgrading from 3.5, to 4, to 4.5, to 5, to 5.5 hold your breath. It also depends on how much of a mess you have made of things. I believe even the Ubuntu guys don't recommend upgrading like that and they do a good job (as do most modern derivative distributions now) of ensuring upgradability.
