Wired article. We Can’t Let John Deere Destroy the Very Idea of Ownership
http://www.wired.com/2015/04/dmca-ownership-john-deere/

You buy the hardware but they control the software. They want to block the owners of the vehicle from controlling their own car or tractor.

What "features" can their put in their proprietary software? Back doors, tracking and remote kill switch. They can also add "features" that makes a vehicle stops working, fries some chips, after around 15 years plus minus three years on 25% of them. And repairing it will cost more then a less old vehicle. A way to make the consumption wheel spin. This proprietary software will also block inventors who want to modify the car or engine.

Nice features... Volvo Trucks have for around 15 years been able to on distance give their trucks extra boost when the users is heavy loaded. Today in Volvos Cars are connected to Internet and users with a "app" in their smart phone locate the car, what speed its running in and more information. Free software or proprietary software? What back door are their? Take over the car at a distance? Hack it to create an accident?

Carnegie Mellon University works with GM and DARPA. Lovely...

Not DMCA related but I reacted at this.

Self-parking Volvo ploughs into journalists after owner neglects to pay for extra feature that stops cars crashing into people
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/selfparking-volvo-plows-into-journalists-after-owner-neglects-to-pay-for-extra-feature-that-stops-cars-crashin...

How to they activate that feature? Remotely? If remotely can it also be disabled with back doors?

How will the people who have been depended in features like this react in a world without them? Today it seems people have harder time to find a place without their smart phone GPS or GPS in car. Comparing the real world to maps or asking other people for directions it almost a no-no today. Not using their own body and knowledge but instead be passive consumers and depend on technology...

Some days ago I was talking with a representative for Volvo Cars that was demonstrating the new XC90.

The car use a "cloud" technique developed and hosted by Ericsson. The car can warn other cars about ice patches, traffic jams and more. The car is also ALWAYS connected and the user cant choose to disconnect it. Its ALWAYS vulnerable for attacks. The representative said that is use encrypted connection but by response to that was the the software is probably proprietary and how can I trust that? Volvo is planning on a privacy/air plane mode for the car but again my response what how can I trust that it is 100% disconencted from everything? The car has a SOS button so it must in some way be able to send a alert message.

I did talk about how someone hacked a car with a laptop in the back seat and had total control of the car and asked the representative how can I trust this car running proprietary software that is always connected to the internet.

I hope I got this person thinking a bit.

The car clip if you havnt seen it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqe6S6m73Zw

A smartcar! How nice! Very useful! Imagine for example you are an activist of some kind and you own a smart car like that volvo thing. Imagine some evil motherfucker wants you dead because he doesn't like you and your activism. In the past he would have had planned some kinda of an intricate way to get rid of you like hiring a hitman or a lawyer or whatever to get rid of you. And those means always leave some trail. Not today! Today we have all sorts of smart things! Smart enough to get rid of everyone and make it like it was an accident and no one would have the slightest chance to prove it wasn't an accident. I mean why bother with drones and shit when you can just crash someone's car into a wall..

Exactly my point!
These things are why my laptop and desktop are never connected to the internet-- so evil motherfuckers can't remotely explode them!
