I can't play any video files with "Movie Player"; which think is totem. I can't play any avi, mpeg, mov, or divx files. I see the window pop up, but then it closes.

since VLC and Mplayer are omitted, I'm up shizzle creek with out a paddle.

Any help?

That sounds like a very peculiar problem. I've not had that experience, but perhaps someone else has?

One thing you could try is to install the version of Totem Movie Player that has the the xine backend and see if the same thing occurs when attempting to play a movie with totem-xine. VLC Player will be in the next release, BTW.

Mpeg certainly works for me on Totem. You can try in any case ffmpeg, which should play all the formats you mention:

This package contains the ffplay multimedia player, the ffserver streaming server and the ffmpeg audio and video encoder. They support most existing file formats (AVI, MPEG, OGG, Matroska, ASF...) and encoding formats (MPEG, DivX, MPEG4, AC3, DV...).
