I am looking for an alternative to G-mail to my wife. Amongst others FSF recommend posteo.de for their use of OSS.

Have any of you looked into posteo, their business model and claims of privacy?

Firstly, a few brief points of note:
*The FSF recommends Free Software, not Open Source Software. There's little practical difference between the two, but the philosophies are totally different.
*The recommendation isn't because the service uses free software, but because it can be used with only free software.

As for your question, I've only had a brief look over their website, so you might like to wait for somebody more intimately acquainted with it, but it seems both both good and reasonable on the surface. If you (or your wife) are willing to invest financially in an e-mail service, Posteo looks like a nice choice.

However, depending on your intentions in switching, you may also need to encrypt your messages. If you don't mind me asking, is there any particular reason you or your wife want an alternative to GMail?

I switched to posteo two weeks ago and i like it a lot!
It integrates easy into my existing setup and has easy to understand guidelines.
I also like the feature to copy your existing emails into your new account.
They integrate gpg support in their webmailer as long as you installed the Mailvelope browser plugin and they use current secruity standards.
Also i consider 1€ a month a small price.

If you look for a free software friendly, Europe based Mail provider posteo is a good catch in my opinion.

Anything is better than a google service as far as privacy. That being said, the claims of privacy are claims and not trusting a stranger is always better than trusting them, especially when "business", and data is big business. Encrypt your mail with gpg. Enigmail with icedove takes 5 minutes to understand and employ, even for absolute computer illiterates.
cheers

I agree

I do not agree

Being an itiot - or computer illiterate as you put it - I know for a fact that things are not as easy as you formulate it here. I have spend hours and hours on trying to figure it out - an I'm not done yet.

Furthermore, most people just can not live without web mail! I think I'll give mailvelope a shot once, to see if it's something to introduce to web mail addicts.

well, we all are smart in few things and dumb in many others, sure. But even a computer illiterate, the one that only knows to read English, point and click with a mouse and can remember two instructions, can learn how to use it in, well, let's say 15 minutes :)

I'm not talking about learning gpg, how it works, the best practices to employ, etc
What I'm talking about is the very basic usage. The GUI is so clear and intuitive I really think anyone can catch up with it very quickly. It doesn't take a deep knowledge of gpg to use it correctly - all one needs to do is create a key pair (via GUI), select encrypt (via GUI), click on an encrypted mail and insert the passphrase to decrypt it.
Or am I wrong? I haven't used enigmail in a long while but I remember it as an extremely easy to use and clear GUI.

If a contact of yours has issues with it, why don't you send them a tiny guide. I recommend you don't send them a link for a website, but instead try to write one and make it as brief and clear (as if they were 5).
