I'm helping a small advocacy group make a website. The group has a few categories of members. Is there website software (?) will let the admin categorize the members' accounts? Where the account type dictates which web pages are visible to the member?

Have you already decided how tech you're going to use to build the website? I know of at least one community group with 200-500 members that uses CiviCRM for this, integrated with their Drupal site. I know Civi also has official plug-in modules for WordPress, and Joomla:
