Hello everybody,

I am a Trisquel 6.0 user on a laptop.

I would like to know which free software you advise to me for :

- peer-to-peer,
- torrent sharing.

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Let's share everything in a free way.

For torrents, Transmission. What do you mean by "peer-to-peer"?

"peer-to-peer" is network where your device (only if it is a part of it)
acts as client as well as a server.
Like in torrent you download from many other devices(peer) and you
upload to other devices as well.
Gnunet and gnutella are such other peer-to-peer networks I think!

Yes, I know what peer-to-peer is, but that's too general to recommend a program for. Torrents are another example of peer-to-peer.

I thought Transmission was Libre. As a dependency, it installed AdobeReader_sve.i486 0:8.1.7-1 on my system. I searched for that file, looks to me like it's really Adobe Reader. Any thoughts on this?

I did a search of that, and all the results I got were for Fedora or Red Hat GNU/Linux, and the package you mention is from Adobe's repositories. I'm pretty sure no such package exists in Trisquel's repo.

This sounds completely crazy. Of course anything can happen if you use random 3rd party repos.

I believe transmission is free and that adobe turd is certainly proprietary.

The latest Transmission can be added to your Trisquel by using this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~transmissionbt/+archive/ppa since the version in the Trisquel repos is older.

You could use GNUnet for peer to peer sharing.

There is also Frostwire. It is free software under the GPL.

Thank you for your answers.

I installed (with Synaptic) GnuNet :

When I open it, under I can read :

Démon arrêté (stopped) : the file /etc/gnunetd.conf doesn't exist. Launch gnutnet-setup -d. [I translate from French to English.]

When I type it in the terminal :

asfreeas@asfreeas-Aspire-E1-571:~$ gnunet-setup -d
FATAL: `access' failed on file `/etc/' at gnunet-setup.c:398 with error: Permission non accordée
Abandon
asfreeas@asfreeas-Aspire-E1-571:~$

[Permission non accordée = Permission not allowed.]

Under right, there is this signal ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zeichen_267.svg ) on the animal.

What must I do in order to use GnuNet correctly ? (search for files, downloading them, share my own files)

2. I also installed Gnutella :

At once when I open it, a little window tells me :

Warning

This version of gtk-gnutella is pretty old. Please visit http://gtk-gnutella.sourceforge.net/ and update your copy of gtk-gnutella.

How do I update Gnutella ? (How do I update a free software ?)

3. I also installed Transmission :

I can use a torrent file but :

- how do I create a torrent file (from a pdf, or an ogg, for example) ?
- how do I share torrent files (on The Pirate Bay or any such sites) ?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

>Permission non accordée
The user account doesn't have write permission under /etc where global (=for all users) settings are stored. So perhaps try running the -d with sudo.

>How do I update a free software ?
The update manager takes care of it. However, the version in the repositories might not be the very latest version. This might or might not be a problem depending on the software. If the newest version from the web page doesn't require newer libraries than what is available on your system, you could compile it. There might be binaries available too but use those at your own risk.

>how do I create a torrent file
To do so with transmission apparently requires the package transmission-cli and using the command transmission-create. After you've installed the package, read the manual page man transmission-create
