My laptop gave up the ghost a few months ago so no Trisquel for me, had to use Puppy off a usb on an older laptop with no hard drive.

Anyways, my son has kindly given me his old Alien M11x laptop. Downside it's got as Broadcom DW1520 Wireless-N Half-Mini card adaptor which isn't playing with Trisquel.

Any suggestions on a replacement wifi thingy to get the laptop up and running?

Your safest bet is the USB adapter here:

Some laptops' BIOS restrict the use of any othe Mini PCI/internal radios
to their own/original, so replacing that although more convenient may
not work.

I have that problem with my HP Pavilion dv4. I have found plenty of mini
PCI express wifi cards that work with free firmware but the bios won't
recognize them.

Here are some suggestions how to get around such a problem http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_unauthorized_MiniPCI_network_card

Apparently quite a bit of monkeying around is required and you can destroy your hardware in the process...

I own an Alienware M11x and can confirm that it does not restrict replacing the wi-fi cards.

I put an Atheros-based wi-fi card into mine and it works just fine. So, go ahead and find a replacement internal wi-fi card.

Edit
See the h-node entry for more details:

I don't know Alienware M11x although it's only recently that Dell started implementing the digital restrictions. It may also be that the card you got was in the white list too. I would not assume that all Alienware M11x systems are digital restriction free.

As far as I know Dell, Toshibia, Lenovo/IBM, and HP have shipped laptops with digital restrictions on the Mini PCIe slot. I highly recommend avoiding these companies at all costs.

Thanks for the info on this card. Thought it might have been simple change but it seems not to be. I'll look into the usb adaptor although I've found that running the other laptop from puppy on a usb does make it easy to damage.

Else I get another second hand lappy.

I use this USB adapter: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter
Work very well with Trisquel 5.0 & 5.5 on my Netbook Asus Eee PC 1001PX and laptop Lenovo R60
