Multi-tasking with opening Gnome menus and keyboard shortcuts?

I noticed that in Gnome when I open the Trisquel menu (Where all the programs are located) and try to use a keyboard shortcut (E.g. To turn up the volume), the keyboard shortcuts won't function unless if I close the menu. There any way around this?
