The students are very unwilling to try GNU/Linux, even in a virtual machine or on a USB storage device (either Live or pre-installed). Yet they do need to use certain GNU/Linux-based software/service in their scientific researching. Therefore I decide to ship everything they need in a VM. Whatever they need to do is to install a hypervisor on a Windows-based server, set the virtual network to bridged mode, and adjust the network configuration parameters as necessary.

I believe that some patience is necessary. When they realize the awkwardness (stupidity) of Windows, they will begin to think differently.
