Thinkpad T400 lost ethernet connection

Hi, my dad has gone on his thinkpad this morning and has lost internet connection, he's running Gnome 3.8.4 and on the network connections he is 'connected' but when on a web browser we cannot connect to any web page.
Anyone any ideas as to what could be causing this?
