Logs rapidly filling up root partition after upgrade

Description

A few days ago I did a fresh install of Toutatis (graphical install from LiveCD) on a 32-bit Fujitsu Lifebook T4215. I made a 16GB root partition, and used the rest of the drive to create a separate /home partition. About two days later, I used Update Manager to apply all available updates, then upgrade from Toutatis to Belenos. The only extra applications I had installed were a few games; 0 AD, FreeCiv, MineTest, and Egoboo which was removed during the upgrade. AFAIK I had plenty of space in the root partition before the upgrade, and it seems unlikely the upgrade would have worked at all if the root partition was full.

Almost immediately after the upgrade, I got a message telling me the root partition was full. I tried running apt-get auto-remove, apt-get auto-clean, and apt-get clean, which did free up some space, but didn't seem to solve the issue. I posted a request for advice in the forum, to rule out user error before filing a bug report:
https://trisquel.info/en/forum/root-partition-filled-after-upgrade-6-7

Using Baobab, I discovered that most of the space was being used by files in /var/log. Using ls -l, I found that the three files taking up almost 10GB of space were syslog, kern.log, and dpkg.log, and there were also much smaller syslog.1 and kern.log.1 files. I deleted the three largest files and rebooted, leaving the syslog.1 and kern.log.1 files there. Upon reboot, the system had created a new syslog (already above 200MB) and kern.log (already above 100MB). A few minutes later they were twice that size.

Status:active» needs more info

Can you post some lines of those files?

Fri, 10/23/2015 - 12:55

Perhaps expand the root partition for the time being?

or try: aptitude autoclean
And delete only the older files

Or perhaps try: logrotate
(To rotate the logs)

But first you need to determine what is creating this issue (tail -f /var/log/syslog), so you need to copy and paste the logs please.

EDIT: I should have included in the original bug report a link to the forum discussion on this:
https://trisquel.info/en/forum/root-partition-filled-after-upgrade-6-7

Thanks for the suggestions MeNoMore. However...

>> Perhaps expand the root partition for the time being? <<

Making the partition larger would give me more time before I have to delete the logs to make space, but less space in my /home partition. Also it's a bit like suggesting using a pot to move the sea instead of a spoon :P

As mentioned in the forums, I currently have a 16GB OS partition. Let's say I turn on the laptop at 7pm (having deleted all the huge logs the night before). At this point, 6.1GB of the OS partition is used, with 8.5 BG free. By 7:20pm, 6.7GB is used, with 7.9GB free. By 7:30, 7.1GB is used. At this rate (about 2GB per hour), assuming I don't install any more software, the OS partition will be filled after every 4 hours of runtime.

>> or try: aptitude autoclean
And delete only the older files <<

Assuming this does the same thing as "sudo apt-get autoclean", I have done this. See here:
https://trisquel.info/en/forum/root-partition-filled-after-upgrade-6-7#comment-80086

Didn't clear enough to space to make any difference.

>> Or perhaps try: logrotate
(To rotate the logs) <<

Can you explain this in more detail, maybe on the forum post (linked above)?

>> But first you need to determine what is creating this issue (tail -f /var/log/syslog), so you need to copy and paste the logs please. <<

Willdo. Just running the system for a while to regenerate the cancerous logs. I deleted them all last night before I shut down, in case they prevented the machine from booting.

EDIT: The log files which seem to be affected are: auth.log, dmesg, kern.log, syslog, and Xorg.0.log.

Syslog and kern.log were too big to cut'n'paste. I tried to make a copy of them onto the desktop as .txt files (sudo cp /var/log/syslog /home/strypey/Desktop/syslog.txt). This made the terminal hang, but it got there in the end. When I tried to upload the .txt file, it made this page hang for ages. Any suggestions?

Have you tried the tail command suggested above?

Thu, 10/29/2015 - 04:48

*blush* sorry. No, I didn't fully understand what was being suggested. I do now, and I will apply it to the syslog and maybe kern.log too, and post the results here sometime in the next couple of days. Should I delete those massive logs I posted (if that's possible) and do the same with those files?

Fri, 10/30/2015 - 01:35

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try the hardware switch first, as it's the quickest and easiest solution anyone has come up with so far. If that doesn't fix it, I will try your solution.

>> The best solution would be to physically remove the card, of course. <<

I have no experience with opening up laptops and removing components. Is the wireless chipset on a Fujitsu Lifebook even on a modular card that can be removed?

It appears that the unsupported wireless card was the disease, so I've killed the pain by turning off the wireless subsystem using the hardware switch. Some suggestions on how actually cure the disease:

1) finding someone capable of writing the libre driver/ firmware required, and asking everyone with non-working hardware to put in some $ towards paying them to do so. I would happily chip in a few dollars if some of the hundreds of other GNU/Linux users with the same or similar chipsets would do the same.

Or failing that:
2) fixing the linux-libre kernel (or whatever piece of software is responsible) so that it logs the absence of the driver/firmware *once*, instead of over and over again.

Or failing that:
3) fix the logging system so that /var/log has a maximum size by default, and the system automatically deletes older logs instead of GZipping them and keeping them until they fill the available partition

Or failing that:
4) Have the graphical installer create a separate /log partition and put the logs there by default

Just to confirm, it has been a few hours since I turned the wireless switch to off, and no noticeable growth in logs.

Sun, 06/18/2017 - 08:12

This bug has not been fixed on this device (Fujitsu LifeBook) by any of the updates to Trisquel 7 since I filed this bug. I am now using a USB network device from ThinkPenguin (TPE-N15OUSBL). For the device to work, the hardware switch for wireless networking has to be switched on. Despite keeping my Trisquel 7 install updated, the log cancer problem mentioned in this bug report is still happening whenever the hardware switch is turned on under Trisquel 7.

Sun, 06/18/2017 - 08:25

I was emailed some time back about debugging this log cancer issue. Finally managed to get some time, energy, and focus together to do something about it.

The person who emailed me said they'd written to a kernel guy, who said he didn't think the kernel was to blame but maybe wpa_supplicant. They asked me to remove my current /var/log/syslog and then trigger the bug. Then, after waiting a while, take a look at the new syslog to see if the kernel complaints are always immediately followed by wpa_supplicant complaints. They also asked if I could attach the log.

So I just deleted all the cancerous logs a couple of hours ago. The new syslog does indeed mention wpa_supplicant quite a bit. Log file attached.

If I can be of any further help in getting this issue diagnosed and fixed, please don't hesitate to let me know.
