This issue has taken place at least a couple of times. As you reopen the program it notifies that an unexpected closure took place and allows to recover the documents (the recovery goes fine).
Are you talking about Evince PDF viewer?
This is likely an upstream problem, though. You should report the bug at the Evince website.
