Getting Sites to Work

If a site doesn't show video, play audio, or show graphics or content as you it should, you may be missing a browser plugin, or you have a function turned off in Preferences or Add-ons. The Content pane in Preferences (EditPreferences) lets you turn off Java, Javascript, and automatic loading of images. The Extensions tab in Add-ins (on the Tools menu) lets you turn off extensions such as plugins.

Plugins can be added to Trisquel's web browser to manage Internet content that it is not designed to process. For example, the GNU Project provides the Gnash plugin to view Adobe Flash files.

Flash

The Flash format is used for is used for animation, games, and other non-static content. You should not use Adobe's Flash player because it is proprietary software. Instead, the free software GNU Gnash player comes installed on Trisquel to handle Flash. For further information, see our manual for playing videos without Adobe Flash and the documentation for GNU Gnash.

Videos and Audio

The Totem Movie Player plugin is installed to play a wide range of audio and video formats.

Portable Document Files

Evince is the default portable document files (.pdf) viewer in Trisquel. A .pdf document has an identical appearance across most platforms and requires less storage space than other formats rich in graphics and features.

Currently there is no plugin to embed Evince inside the browser window. .pdf files must be viewed externally.

Java

Many websites embed small Java applications such as games or utilities into web pages. To display Java content, you should install OpenJDK (openjdk-6-jre) as well as the IcedTea browser plugin (icedtea6-plugin).

Shockwave

Unfortunately, Adobe's Shockwave (used for multimedia content like games, presentations, and learning applications) is proprietary, and there is no free software decoder for Shockwave at this time.

Images and Animations

Beyond specific kinds of plugin content there are a few things to try if sites don't appear to work properly.

The web browser allows you to prevent images from loading for certain websites to make pages load faster. If you are having trouble viewing images, it's possible that image loading might have been turned off. Here is how to check and correct that setting:

  1. Select Edit in the menu, and click Preferences.
  2. In the Preferences window, select the Content panel.
  3. Make sure there is a check mark next to Load images automatically.
  4. Click on Exceptions... next to Load images automatically to open the Exceptions - Images window.
  5. In the Exceptions - Images window, look at the list of sites. Make sure the sites with which you're having trouble are not in the list.
  6. Click OK to close the Options window.

Clear Cookies and Cache

Sometimes the browser can get out-of-synch with content on websites. In these cases the problems can be fixed by clearing the browser's cache and the Cookies associated with the problematic websites:

  1. Open the History menu and select Show All History.
  2. At the top right corner, type the name of the website in the Search History field, and press Enter.
  3. In the resulting list, right-click on the site you wish to clear, and select Forget About This Site.
  4. Close the Library window.
