How to install Xubuntu in Trisquel?

Hello all, I am trying to do "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" to install that window manager, but it doesnt work in trisquel. Why?

David,
xubuntu uses xfce as it's Desktop Environment/Window Manager. So all you would have to do is install xfce and that should get you where you want to be.
I run xfce instead of the default myself because it is much more customizable.

if you want whiskermenu, add: xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin
indicators (if you want them)
sudo apt-get install xfce4-indicator-plugin network-manager-gnome
sudo apt-get --no-install-recommends install indicator-sound
--no-install-recommend = stops installing extra packages at almost 200MB
After this their is theming. Default XFCE dont look good. Look here for some themes: http://xfce-look.org/

If you like xubuntu default theme, greybird, just install murrine-themes and it will be available in appearance configuration.

search after xfce in synaptic and you will get a long list of plugins and other software. I think xfce4-goodies installs big bunch of xfce software.

You know, after all that fuss I made, I've been using XFCE for a few days now and it's so fragmented! Way more than Unity and Trisquel desktops. Thunar file manager is especially annoying... No search!? I was trying to avoid figuring out how to revert my broken Trisquel Desktop and ended up just reverting back to my initial Clonezilla image. What I am learning is GNU/Linux Desktop environments are pretty fragile. From now on, I will log any changes I make to my system and associate it with fairly frequent Clonezilla images.
Actually I'm not a disappointed as I may seem. I love this learning process. I'm finally understanding what it means to take full responsibility for my software based choices :) The empowerment I get from using GNU/Linux is way worth it!

Welcome to the world of projects with few developers. I believe this is a problem with forking and lack off cooperation in the free software or open source world. People alone are working their asses off their forks but much isnt happning in general in the community.
Saving/logging the changes you make is a good choice. Everyone running GNU/Linux eventually does that.

Yes. By fragile I mean, if you customize the UI, its difficult to just reset it back to when it was not customized.
You can always remove all files in the home folder that start with a dot. All application will go back to their default settings.

Welcome to the world of projects with few developers. I believe this is a
problem with forking and lack off cooperation in the free software or open
source world. People are working their asses off their forks but much isnt
happening. Some days ago someone in the forum wanted to fork Trisquel to make
a Openbox version. I and others said that isnt it better to make it part of
Trisquel. The tone in the thread was a bit hard and judging of the guy who
wanted to start that project. Then the thread died... Start helping each
other instead of attacking.
Maybe people want to create their own thing that is almost the same as many
other projects, their baby. The feel they have created something of their
own.

The magnificent Xfce has been around for 20 years now, polished, patched, tweaked and made as stable as it gets.
If you find it "fragmented" you are doing it wrong. Maybe try and compile 4.12 on a fresh netinstall and enjoy.
I have to respectfully disagree on this one. The experience just isn't very consistent compared to the non-free OSes. I know I may be compared unfairly, but we do have living examples of stuff that looks awesome. I think we could at least mimic the feel. I feel the same way about lots of Linux stuff that is super old and stable but just kind of funky and "unique". That's what I mean by fragmented.

I was trying XFCE because I saw Xubuntu in action and I liked the look. Please understand I am totally onboard with the GNU vision. The fragmentation im talking about is really just inconsistency in the user experience when it comes to the GUI of for example, XFCE. I find it is very easy for me to just break the GUI. Actually, in Trisquel Desktop I recently messed up my GUI and its so unfortunate that it isnt easy to just be able to reset it pretty easily.
Again, I want to restate that I LOVE the GNU vision and I think Trisquel is a beautiful distro. I wish I could help out with the UX when it comes to the GUI. I am not sure if there is a place for someone to suggest non-bug related requests. As someone who has worked with developers, I know that feature requests often get shrugged off.

If you want to get a desktop that works like Xubuntu, but minus the non-free software, maybe installing XFCE, Xubuntu's wallpapers, and Xubuntu's theme on Trisquel, then booting into the Xubuntu Live CD and taking the configuration files (make the file manager show hidden files and take the .config (if I'm not mistaken - I hope XFCE houses its config files there) folder in the Live CD's home folder) and then copying it to your Trisquel installation will help.
Or you could just install Xubuntu's wallpapers and theme(s) on Trsquel (I think it's in the repos - install their standalone packages)and configure it to your liking "manually"......
