## Dist-upgrade t7 > t8

Although it was already possible to upgrade a T7 machine into T8, the
manual steps can be tricky. The guided/graphical process for the upgrade
is now in place and can be tested by running the following commands on a
fully up to date Trisquel 7 installation:

Graphical:
update-manager -d
Text/terminal:
do-release-upgrade -d

If you want to do a dry run (so the whole upgrade is tested but no
actual changes are made to the disk) add '-s', which stands for 'sandbox'.

I tried it on a VM and it worked correctly. Please give it a go and
report any errors by attaching the contents of "/var/log/dist-upgrade".
I haven't tried upgrading from Trisquel-mini or other desktops.

https://trisquel.info/en/forum/testing-trisquel-8-upgrade-process
has more information about how to try it out inside a virtual machine.

## Wrapping up the release:

The reminding steps to finish the release are:

* Test the iso set I'm building today, test the upgrade system, fix
major problems if needed (most things can be fixed through updates).
* Add two packages to the build system that should be pre-installed by
default: GNU Ring and the Electrum wallet.
* Make and package the artwork.

Hopefully everyone can make it to the Freedom Friday meeting on IRC.

Trisquel 8 is getting closer, but will it give me:

* user switching
* GNOME 3.22 or later
* Kodi
* GNOME Videos YouTube search
* Gedit with header bar
* Firefox 57 without Pocket/ads
* WebRTC
* Mozc
* LUKS
* extract RAR files
* color emoji
* emoji input
* Flatpak
* Replicant dev tools
* updates over Tor, like Debian

I did a clean install over my Debian box (I have a separate home partition). Can't wait for the new artwork. So far snappy and pleasant to use. I'm happy that multiple keyboard layouts and the keyboard switcher now work and windows have no lag when resized (used to affect my HP Probook, hesitant corner dragging).

Abrowser addons have the same old glitch that needs a shortcut to work.

As I reported with the December ISO, and as others have reported with 2/17 ISO, I have trouble running the newest ISO live. After selecting "Try Trisquel without installing" I see a splash screen, followed by a black screen with a cursor. From this screen I can use Ctrl+Alt+F* to get a terminal at which I can log in with user="trisquel" pass="" but I cannot get to a display manager.

The problem occurs whether I use dd or Startup Disk Creator.

The flashing Trisquel logo at thr splash screen has a black background instead of a transparent background. This is also the case for my current install, which is an upgrade from Trisquel 7, but was not the case with my previous install, which was from the ISO from last summer. Although this is purely cosmetic, I bring it up because I recall there being a bug a while back pertaining to a Trisquel logo.

I have not tried actually installing yet, but when I tried to do so after encountering this issue with the December ISO installing gave me the same result, just a black screen with no display manager.

https://trisquel.info/en/forum/cant-boot-trisquel-8-usb

It seems that multiple people have had this problem, while others have had no trouble, so perhaps the issue is hardware?

I did have a problem with the previous ISO that was put out there a few days ago but the most recent (2018-02-20) works. Please try and download again, then burn it.

http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/

You could try growisofs.

growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/srX=name_of_iso

To be clear, Ruben just updated the ISO or uploaded a new one.

I still have this problem when running the 2/20 ISO on my X60 from a USB drive. No DE or DM, whether I use dd or Startup Disk Creator. I just tried it on an X230, and could not even boot into it. Will there be a new set of ISOs soon that might fix the first issue, or should I buy myself some DVDs and see if that works better than a USB drive?

My fully up to date Trisquel 7 install wont upgrade to Trisquel 8 with both "update-manager -d" and "do-release-upgrade -d".

I'll post error messages/ console output ASAP.

Anyone else have any luck?

Some results I have found:

- Upgrading from Trisquel Mini works
- However, you can't log out because the lxsession-logout package doesn't get installed like it should
- The following packages also get left around:

Most of them seem to be related to mplayer2, which doesn't get upgraded or removed like it should
- I also tried updating Trisquel Desktop with zh-CN locale and texlive-full installed. It succeeded.

Hello

I upgraded one of my pc (used for testing) and it worked. No errors I think.
I had to erase some programs and some old linux-headers (too many, too much space) because root partition was 3/4 full.
The upgrading process needs at least 6 GB. The standard root partition is 10 GB by default (no LVM option). I think it's too small.
Package download didn't take so much time thanks to my net provider...
I don't know if there were upgrading errors...no messages at all.
Now I have a GNOME/Mate desktop, which is quite different from Trisquel 8 Mate installed in other PC...

libre greetings

@Pablo G you mean that you can use GNOME or Mate, you can remove GNOME packages using apt-get. The APT cache may have taken the space try to clear it: $ sudo apt-get clean

I see the new desktop is MATE and with previous programs that I had installed from GNOME.
Problems space disk were previous to upgrade process.
This can happen more people. There is no autoremove for many old kernels (too much useless space disk) and the root partition is short by default (10 GB)...
There were an autoremove process after installing (some hours) and now there are 9,1 GB of free space.
We are testing, isn't it?

10GB was fine for a root partition in the 1990s, and is probably still adequate for a server. But desktop systems involve a *lot* more large packages (eg desktop environments) than a headless server system, and the kinds of applications installed on a desktop system also tend to be much larger (esp. games). Also, internal hard drives now have much greater capacity than they did in the 90s, so larger root partition is not so great a sacrifice as it was then.

The default root partition probably needs to be at least 15-20GB. If this creates problems for people using Trisquel as a server, perhaps the installer could ask the user whether they are installing for server or desktop use, and change the root partition size as appropriate?

With all the software I need installed, it takes 3.6 GB here :)

It really depends on the user (basically the question is: how many large games are you going to install?) but I would say 10 GB is more than enough for teh rootz.

There's no need to hand-hold for servers. The installer supports making your own custom choices and if you're technical enough (which you should be if you're setting up a server from scratch), it's no big deal at all. In fact I tend to completely avoid those kinds of automatic partition choices for this exact reason.

I think the automatic partitioning should do one of two things:

1. Set a minimum size for / which is quite large.
2. Just default to having only "/", no "/home".

It might be a better UX if upgrading from T7>T8 only upgraded the base system, instead of adding a new DE (Desktop Environment) and changing the application set. But I can see how this would create a bunch of extra headaches for the Trisquel dev crew. After all we would want a newer version of our existing DE and applications, or what's the point upgrading?

When major interface changes are made in a new version of a distro - especially when those changes include introducing a new DE and changing the default applications - it's probably a good time for users to do a fresh install. If you have /home on a separate partition this is a fairly painless process (although do make sure you back up anything you can't bear to lose just in case). As discussed on other threads, my preferred partition scheme includes a separate /home partition, and a second primary partition where I can install new versions/ distros for testing, before deciding whether to switch to them fulltime.

I took the opportunity to do a Trisquel 8 upgrade on a new laptop I received from work. It is a Dell Latitude E5570. I originally installed Trisquel 7 after adding in a new internal wifi adapter. Knowing that it worked well with that version of the OS, I decided to go ahead and run the test upgrade.

Other than not liking Mate all that much, the upgrade went perfect for me, and the system seems to run quite nice. I tried to install XFCE, but it said that the dependencies are missing from the repository. I assume this is because it still isn't quite production worthy.

Anyways, as for the upgrade mechanism that you wanted tested. It worked quite nice, at least on a fresh Trisquel 7 installation. If I was brave I'd try it on my laptop that I've had since 2013 which had 6, and then was upgraded to 7 on it. But I'm not that brave yet. Maybe after I get my NAS configured and get everything backed up.

Cheers!

I did an upgrade from 7 to 8. I did the upgrade from the console command, because the update-manager was having some trouble displaying the text in the box listing the packages. Now I am on 8 and it won't upgrade to libdvdnav4 from version 4.2.1-3. According to synaptic it has to remove gnome-mplayer, mplayer2, and trisquel-mini-recommended to install libdvdnav4.
